[Bug 761113] New: [workaround known - powermanagement issue] wired ethernet can't connect after upgrade 11.4@32bit->12.1@64bit
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=761113 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=761113#c0 Summary: [workaround known - powermanagement issue] wired ethernet can't connect after upgrade 11.4@32bit->12.1@64bit Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: Eduard.Avetisyan@desy.de QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686) AppleWebKit/535.7 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/16.0.912.36 Safari/535.7 A OSE11.4@32bit system worked fine on DELL Latitude E6400 laptop with wired network card (Intel 82567LM Gigabit Network). After upgrade to 12.1@64bit the network connection isn't possible anymore as the network device doesn't act properly, e.g. the cable connection isn't even sensed. Actual kernel version is 3.1.9 at the time when the problem was identified. After looong forum searches (took months) the cause+workaround was found in e1000-devel mailing lists. The cause appears to be powermanagement that send the eth device to a certain sleep mode and won't wake it up automatically. The workaround is to kick it manually (or put into some startup script): echo on > /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000\:00\:19.0/power/control (the device address should be taken from the actual system, may use "lspci" to get it). I think it's quite annoying bug, but luckily should be something easy to fix, perhaps even via online update. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot up the system 2. Plug a network cable 3. No network connection - no cable sense After the workaround step posted above all works fine. # ethtool eth0 Settings for eth0: Cannot get device settings: No such device Cannot get wake-on-lan settings: No such device Cannot get message level: No such device Cannot get link status: No such device No data available #lspci -v 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82567LM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03) Subsystem: Dell Device 0233 Flags: fast devsel, IRQ 22 Memory at f6fe0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [disabled] [size=128K] Memory at f6fdb000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [disabled] [size=4K] I/O ports at efe0 [disabled] [size=32] Capabilities: [c8] Power Management version 2 Capabilities: [d0] MSI: Enable- Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+ Capabilities: [e0] PCI Advanced Features Kernel driver in use: e1000e -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Eduard,
It sounds the driver's issue, could you attach the /var/log/messages and dmesg when the network is broken? Thanks!
