In addition to the above error, when first logging into the system I would get the following error: Unable to Modify /var/lib/gdm/.ICEauthority file (something similar to that at leat). When reviewing that file I noticed the ownership was screwed up. I then remember copying over the passwd and shadow file from another server (openSuse 10.2). Basically, I screwed up the ownership. After modifying the ownership to the new passwd file, the ICEauthority error is gone. I rechecked the /usr/lib/Gconf/2/* files and permissions look fine there (all root:root). I reinstalled the system and the error is gone at this point. My assumptions were that there were permission issues somewhere; however, before reinstalling, I installed a new box and compared ACLs on the system. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary on the box having issues.
