[Bug 556513] New: Poor WiFi connection
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=556513#c0 Summary: Poor WiFi connection Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jakub.rusinek@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Opera/9.80 (X11; Linux i686; U; pl) Presto/2.2.15 Version/10.10 Since I have installed 11.2, I was constantly complaining about my ISP, but it seems that restarting "network" service makes my poor connection behave a bit better. What do I mean by poor connection? Somebody with another card, another driver on Factory (the later 11.2) met the same problems. http://old.nabble.com/WiFi-performance-on-11.2-td26149138.html I've got a RaLink 2561 802.11g based WLAN card and I'm using rt91pci driver with included ralink-firmware. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. install fresh openSUSE 11.2 2. configure ifup/ifdown based connection (WPA2-PSK) 3. try using it. Actual Results: Dropping packets, jumpy speed (whiles of downloading at 120Kb/s and then again 0 - all and over again). Also, only the second or sometimes even the third request is completed. Overall it's very baaad. Expected Results: High transfer, stable connection. Ask for everything. Will remain restarting network service 'til you find the reason. Oh, about restarting network service. Take a look at command below and the output: $ sudo service network restart root's password: Shutting down network interfaces: vboxnet0 No configuration found for vboxnet0 Nevertheless the interface will be shut down. vboxnet0 done wlan0 device: RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI wlan0 done Shutting down service network . . . . . . . . . done Hint: you may set mandatory devices in /etc/sysconfig/network/config Setting up network interfaces: vboxnet0 No configuration found for vboxnet0 vboxnet0 unused wlan0 device: RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI wlan0 starting wpa_supplicant wlan0 Starting DHCP4 client. . wlan0 DHCP4 client NOT running wlan0 failed Setting up service network . . . . . . . . . . done -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Q: My connection is dropped every few minutes A: Some access points tend to drop connections if the client is inactive for a specific amount of time. Sometimes this behavior can be changed in the access points configuration interface.
Definitely not my case. Before upgrade everything worked well. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The interesting thing I noticed after filling with bug are: 1) thing from comment #1 (power saving on by default)
The power-saving causes trouble with some APs. You should better switch the "Power management" off [1]. You can check the status [2]. Try to switch NetworkManager off in Yast and connect with the ifup/ifdown method before you send debug logs [3]. 1) I'm doing it but there's no way to set it permanent.
After you set the power management off it remains switched off until the reboot. Right ? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Each ifconfig/iwconfig setting is kept 'til reboot/shutdown etc. By "doing it" I really mean doing it: applying the setting on my own each day. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From what I can tell you. Problem still remains though.
On earlier kernel I've got no problem. Something's broken in 2.6.3x. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
