[Bug 688024] New: CPU (i7) spends time in C3/etc sleep states even on full load, acpi related problem
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=688024 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=688024#c0 Summary: CPU (i7) spends time in C3/etc sleep states even on full load, acpi related problem Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: samuel@raa.to QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Opera/9.80 (X11; Linux x86_64; U; en) Presto/2.7.62 Version/11.01 Even if C3/etc are disabled from bios and boot parameter processor.max_cstate=2 is defined, programs run very slow and/or running time vary greatly. cpufreq -util doesn't help: modprobe acpi-cpufreq -> "FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq (/lib/modules/2.6.38.3-20-desktop/kernel/arch/x86/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.ko): No such device" This was tumbleweed, but the same problems apply to 11.4. boot parameter acpi=off "avoids" this problem, but obviously introduces other problems. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. run a program repeatedly on i7 processor 2. observe running time is two times slower and varies 3. alternatively monitor with "powertop" to see c3 state is being over-utilized Actual Results: c3-state being over-utilized Expected Results: expected results should be as previous used opensuse version 11.2 worked (or windows), that there was no problem of c3 being over utilized, but that programs executed normally and the performance was good (instead of twice slower). hardware: intel i7, lots of bios options tried, gigabyte p55. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Even if C3/etc are disabled from bios and boot parameter processor.max_cstate=2 Modern Intel CPUs are driven by the intel_idle driver with latest kernel. And fallback is acpi processor driver. If you want to disable C-states you can boot with:
modprobe acpi-cpufreq -> "FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq If you still have 11.2 installed, please double check whether acpi-cpufreq gets loaded there (lsmod |grep acpi). If you want to disable C-states you can boot with: Thanks! This hack saves me hours in a day. Although the fans are loud as one can expect. I wish there would be a "sensitivity" parameter for entering out of C0, which would easily fix this problem.
If you still have 11.2 installed, I don't have it installed. I only have the openSUSE 11.4-64bit (default repos).
If in your case frequency is low by default your laptop is very slow Not a laptop in my case. A desktop computer.
You can also install cpupower package from this repo: Yast complains: "cpufrequtils-bench-008-5.1.x86_64 requires libcpufreq.so.0()(64bit), but this requirement cannot be provided"
Please tell me more what can I do to help. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
