It's possible to turn of multicast based DNS resolving by adding "mdns off" to /etc/host.conf.
This is in contradiction with conclusion in bug 446017, comment 3. Could you please provide more information? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Is a line in like
hosts: files dns
in /etc/nsswitch.conf the right approach to disable mdns dns lookups?
bug 446017, comment 3 and 4 implies it as far as I can see. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If comment #5 is right I suggest to add a hint to the log message like:
/etc/host.conf: line
: bad command `mdns off' Please adjust the hosts line of /etc/nsswitch.conf to configure mdns. Also see the nss-mdns man page from the nss-mdns package.
Another possibility is to explicitly add something like mdns This command is not supported anymore. Please use /etc/nsswitch.conf to turn MDNS on or off. To turn MDNS off remove "mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return]" from hosts entry. in host.conf(5). Petr, Lars, Standa, what do you think? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

But as people don't read man pages it would be good as well to add log output which directs people to the documentation.
Ok, so reassigning to Petr. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
