[Bug 222993] New: all fglrx ati drivers from 8.29.6 up to 8.31.5 don't work on hp nc8430 notebook. 8.28.8 works.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222993 Summary: all fglrx ati drivers from 8.29.6 up to 8.31.5 don't work on hp nc8430 notebook. 8.28.8 works. Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X11 3rd Party AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: kra@ecolog.at QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com CC: mhopf@novell.com on a hp nc8430 notebook (core duo t2500 cpu & mobility radeon x1600) running suse linux 10.1 with kernel 2.6.16 and xorg 6.9.0 the latest driver which is working is 8.28.8. all other drivers since this version are not working! they all fail starting xorg with the error-message "preinitdal failed". i think it has something to do with kernel and xorg, because a friend of mine made the 8.30.3 driver working on the same hardware (nc8430) but running fedora core 6 with kernel 2.6.18 and xorg 7.1. look at this mailinglist entry: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-xfree86/2006-Sep/0005.html i will attach a detailed log file from the suse xorg-config-utility sax2. it includes the xorg.conf and the Xorg.log files. what happend between 8.28.8 and 8.29.6? why are x1600 boards not working? could you guys do anythinig to force ati to fix this? i also heard about that fglrx doesn't work with xorg7.2 which is shipped with opensuse10.2. what about that? what should i do, when opensuse10.2 comes out? i want upgrade, but i can't! please look at http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894 this is the ticket i created at the ati-support-portal. but they don't care.... also look at: http://www.linux-club.de/viewtopic.php?p=419211 and http://www.linuxforen.de/forums/showthread.php?p=1456841 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222993 ------- Comment #29 from funtasyspace@yahoo.com 2007-03-31 09:09 MST ------- I just tested with the new fglrx release 8.35.5 and found out that framebuffer + Xserver(fglrx) is working at least in some 1280x1024 modes. The following framebuffer modes seem to work for me (hwinfo --framebuffer): Mode 0x031a: 1280x1024 (+2560), 16 bits Mode 0x031b: 1280x1024 (+5120), 32 bits I didn't test all possible modes, but the other 1280x1024 modes (0x0363 to 0x0366) and 1400x1050 modes (0x0343 to 0x0346) don't work together with fglrx. I also don't know if vga=0x031a just works since the latest (8.35.5) fglrx driver or was working with previous fglrx versions, too. I didn't try these two modes with previous fglrx versions. I only tested the highest possible resolutions (1400x1050) with previous fglrx versions, realized they don't work together with fglrx and disabled framebuffer mode. The native resolution of my TFT display is 1680x1050, so using a framebuffer mode of 1280x1024 makes the text look a bit blurry, but it's much better then no framebuffer mode at all. Tested with Lenovo Thinkpad T60p, ATI FireGL V5250 at 1280x1024 (vga=0x031a) on openSUSE 10.2 (x86_64) and latest Xorg 7.2 packages from http://repos.opensuse.org/xorg72/openSUSE_10.2/ -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

PS: Is it possible to set the framebuffer to the native resolution of my display (1680x1050)? Or is there no support for this mode, yet? Depends on the VESA BIOS of your graphics card. Check with "hwinfo --framebuffer".
