[Bug 628056] New: installer doesn't support whole-disk usage
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628056 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=628056#c0 Summary: installer doesn't support whole-disk usage Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: darryl.miles@darrylmiles.org QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.7) Gecko/20100713 Firefox/3.6.7 During installation (in particlar with openSUSE 11.3 as a DomU) storage can be managed from the Dom0 of multiple guests using LVM and providing one block device for rootfs and another for swap. This typically means there is no partition table on the block device, it is just used as-is for the purpose setup in the installer. This allows for easier maintenance from the Dom0 and by other tooling (since there is no need to manage the redundant notion of a partition table). Such usage makes it easier for a Dom0 to plan and reprovision storage changes for guests, because it is not constrained to the notion of a partition table. However there is no option in the installer disk layout and paritioning to select whole disk usage. While I understand this to be an "advanced" use case, I think an intuative option would be to add it to the Expert.../Advanced... buttons that appear when a disk or disk partition is selected from the tree. However it is important the option if used on a disk which has one or more configured partition, states to the user they must delete all partitions from the device before being able to access the function. Maybe the label on the button can be "Convert to Whole Device Use" (maybe you can think of a better term). This will then when allowed to proceed put the user at the screen to select the type of formatting wanted. It would also be important for the installer to probe for "whole device use" when populating the current disk usage plan. But using file system magic numbers and other such methods. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. Actual Results: Right now you are forced to setup a partition table on a disk with a single partition which can then be formatted. Expected Results: Ability to format /dev/sda as EXT4 for rootfs mounted as /, and /dev/hdb as SWAP both without the use of any partition tables. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Just to reply, will do as per #c3 status of bugzilla entry left unchanged.
Thanks. Let's track it there then,... -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
