[Bug 700840] New: when installing 32-bit libraries yast wants to replace 64-bit but I want both on same system
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=700840 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=700840#c0 Summary: when installing 32-bit libraries yast wants to replace 64-bit but I want both on same system Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: adrian816@hotmail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:2.0b12) Gecko/20110222 Firefox/4.0b12 I would like to have both 64-bit (in /lib64) and 32-bit libraries (in /lib) on my system. I'm trying to install the 32-bit version of the bluetooth libraries (into /lib) using yast and the 32-bit package downloaded from software.opensuse.org. When I do this I get a warning "do you want to replace your 64-bit ... with i586 versions?" for a lot of packages. I selected "cancel" as I didn't want to wreck my installation. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. attempt to install 32-bit bluetooth libraries using yast 2. get warning "doing this will downgrade your system to inferior i586 software 3. I abort the installation Actual Results: warning: "doing this will downgrade your entire system" - I quit from yast at this point Expected Results: yast prompt: "would you like to install both 32-bit and 64-bit libraries in separate directories" and option "yes" btsco software btsco-0.5-42.i486.rpm which depends on these libraries expects to find them in /lib (32-bit versions). Your website software.opensuse.org offers i586 and x86_64 versions of the bluetooth libraries. Other applications requiring access to 32-bit libraries in /lib will also be affected. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If I install "libbluetooth3-32bit-4.88-2.1.x86_64.rpm" will Yast install a 32-bit libbluetooth.so into /lib/ while keeping the existing 64-bit library file in /lib64/?
(thanks for your help), Adrian
The answer is a qualified yes: for any value of "foobar", packages foobar and foobar-32bit (both listed as x86_64 architecture) can coexist… provided of course that they are available. If there is an exception, YaST will mention a dependency conflict: there are something-32bit packages which I haven't installed because YaST proposed to "install somethingelse-i586 despite the inferior architecture" (quoting from memory, I'm not sure of the exact wording) to resolve a dependency conflict. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
