Without the patch, Windows 8 does not run with guest screen resolutions higher than 1024x768. We'll want to follow upstream with respect to the firmware used by default. I believe seabios' vgabios has some still unresolved deficiencies (eg: PM Interface - see: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.emulators.qemu/146810) I wouldn't be opposed to also shipping the seabios project's vgabios in openSUSE. Debian does that, I believe. Unfortunately the patch does not resolve the Windows 8 screen resolution problem for me. The only available screen resolution is 1024x768, if Windows 8 runs as guest system. I built vgabios manually and test it, it works well. I'll attach the vgabios binaries.
