[Bug 222482] New: bad font paths in xorg.conf
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222482 Summary: bad font paths in xorg.conf Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 2 plus Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: SaX2 AssignedTo: ms@novell.com ReportedBy: mrmazda@ij.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Xorg.0.log is littered with bad font path entries. Fresh xorg.conf from sax2 -r: https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=106149&action=view Xorg.0.log from using above xorg.conf: https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=106150&action=view sax2 should create only valid font path entries. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The X-Server automatically removes the non existing ones. The path descriptions are correct as soon as the corresponding fonts are installed. We know that not all paths leads to an existing directory but we want to prevent users from being forced to reconfigure their X-Server just in case they installed a new font package. That happens intentionally -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Why should there be so many possible font paths anyway? Why aren't just one or two font paths to installed font parent directory(s) enough? I have Fedora Core 6 on same system. It has no files section in xorg.conf, and produces only one line of font path error litter in Xorg.0.log: (WW) No FontPath specified. Using compiled-in default. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Anyway bad font path entries are uncritical to the Xserver and it depends on the installed fonts if you have bad font path entries or not. So this cannot be 'fixed' in general anyway - no matter if you try to fix it in xorg.conf or in a hardcoded list in the Xserver. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222482 ------- Comment #6 from ms@novell.com 2006-11-20 08:57 MST ------- - I think so. Our default list includes good handling of bitmap fonts which means somebody spent some time to find out which of them look ok when scaled or not (:unscaled entries) - another issue is that we include KDE's shared fonts which are not part of the build in default list. I can understand RH doesn't care for that ;) - last but not least the font paths refers to possible optional fonts to be installed and therefore builds a preparation for internationalization I really would like to see you happy but I don't understand why it is that important for you not to see these warning messages. They really don't have any performance impact on your running X system and from my perspective they allow the user to install and use fonts in a very simple way -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Those reasons are rational, so I have no serious problem with WONTFIX as a consequence. Still the basic reason why I don't want to see them is the same reason any ordinary user would have when told when something in X is broken to look at Xorg.0.log for error messages. He sees and has to wade through all those font path errors that most likely have nothing to do with any solution to his problem in order to find some (EE) message that should be a real clue. Also those errors require more space in Bugzilla when they are attached. ;-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
