Currently, $USE_MISC_DEVICE is set to "yes" by default in the package's
original sysconfig file:

/etc/sysconfig/autofs:

  (...)
  ## Description:    use autofs miscellaneous device
  ## Type:           string
  ## Default:        "yes"
  #
  # Determine whether the autofs misc device (/dev/autofs) will be used
  # for routing ioctl commands. Requires kernel support (2.6.28 and newer)
  USE_MISC_DEVICE="yes"
  (...)

However, if the user removes the variable from the sysconfig file, the init
script will act as if it was set to "no":

        # Check misc device
        if [ -n "$USE_MISC_DEVICE" -a "x$USE_MISC_DEVICE" = "xyes" ]; then
                sleep 1
        (...)
        else
                if [ -c /dev/$DEVICE ]; then
                        rm /dev/$DEVICE
                fi
        fi
