[Bug 360807] New: Geforce 8400 GS with driver nvidia 169. 09 on dell inspiron 1520 corrupt screen
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=360807 Summary: Geforce 8400 GS with driver nvidia 169.09 on dell inspiron 1520 corrupt screen Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: 64bit OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X11 3rd Party Driver AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: kibana@gmail.com QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com Found By: Customer Created an attachment (id=194319) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=194319) working driver 100.14.19 xorg.conf Hello guys, With last update using opensuseupdater, nvidia-gfx01-kmp-default got updated with kernel update to version 2.6.22.16-0.2-default on opensuse 10.3 x86-64. Upon restart screen turned corrupt (white with noisy vertical line and a blue belt in the middle). I tried compiling the driver from Nvidia site but it also resulted in the similar behavior. When I reverted back to nvidia version 100.14.19, everything works ok. The test was carried out with same xorg.conf. Please help...I am not using bugzilla often so I don't see possibility to attach two xorg.conf simultaneously. Hence, I am attaching non working file in the next post. kibana -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Kibana,
Can you generate and attach an nvidia-bug-report.log for the failure using 169.9. You can generate the bug report by running 'nvidia-bug-report.sh' as the root user.
Thanks, Roland

Thanks Kibana. Unfortunately, I have not been able to reproduce the issue on a Dell XPS M1330 with Geforce 8400M graphics. I'm not sure if it'll help, but if you boot with the 'vga=vesa:off vga=normal' kernel parameter, does the problem persist?

There's an option in nvidia-settings. If you click on the entry for your display on the left, e.g. DFP-0, there'll be a button on the right side that says "Acquire EDID ..."
This did the trick. I acquired the EDID data and specified it in the xorg.conf as explained in http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/169.12/README/appendix-b.... and now everything works fine. I suspected the wrong EDID right from the beginning as the two xorg.0.logs attached with the first post of this report shows it clearly. However, I didn't know how to save the edid data to file. So how are we going to go further now? To find out why current driver reports wrong EDID for the same hardware while 100.14.19 works ok. If you need something else, please let me know.
