[Bug 276450] New: Enhancements requested for instlux

Most important for systems which have low RAM and need a swap-partition to install. Perhaps we can create an intial RAM-Disk image and use this? 2) Enable an "Expert-Mode" - The "Setup Routine" should offer a way to browse directories for example. 3) Use an ISO-Image for installation -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

That is: we could create a swap-on-NTFS during Linux setup. I hope we can do most of the task somehow in the installation system. Regarding the low RAM problem, iirc Live CDs just put a RAM-Disk on C:\ .. but i guess this will only work if C:\ isn't the only partition which needs to be touched - right? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Parhaps SWAP-Space under Windows can be done via the new NTFS-3G driver. That is: we could create a swap-on-NTFS during Linux setup.

this would mean there allready 'exists' a linuxinstall on that machine. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=276450 ------- Comment #4 from monkey9@iae.nl 2007-05-21 09:43 MST ------- There is a working ntfs partition shrinker onboard. This is not the real problem. SuSE should be able to create a /temp.swap, even without people knowing it does. But if not, the tools to create a swap, must be copied, before the swap is needed. This means, the amount of ram, must be compared with the needed installer space, to decide wheater the tools to create swapspace must be copied. My personal opinion is to offer the possibility to partition at the beginning of the install, and not in the 'middle' of it.. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=276450 ------- Comment #5 from monkey9@iae.nl 2007-05-21 11:03 MST ------- Attached to this issue, is the absence of a 'real' partitioner, and the absense of knowledge of how big the different 'dirs' would become: 'realsize'. Fi, /usr, is on my OS: 3,5 GB, but it is gettin too small. /var is growing each time SuSE-updater, or Yast is used to download the repo info.., which is in my opinion not wanted. Why is the info not overwritten? This would save a lot of space... The kernels get bigger and bigger, so total different sizes are needed for /boot nowadays. (personaly i hate all files clutter the disk, and not organised, like with one large partition, and which makes the OS unnessary slow.) Because of these factors, resizing, moving deleting and creating of partitions should be 'normal', to keep the OS tuned. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=276450 ------- Comment #6 from monkey9@iae.nl 2007-05-21 12:33 MST ------- About ntfs-3g: it works fabulous, no mistake was registered by me, and using it mostly to tag music in leftover-windows partitions, but also to make changes in a lot of different files. It is part of the kernel from 2.6.20. 10.3 uses 21, so support is allready there. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It is part of the kernel from 2.6.20. Are you joking ?! NTFS-3G cannot be part of the kernel, because it's a user-space driver.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=276450 ------- Comment #8 from monkey9@iae.nl 2007-05-22 02:38 MST ------- WARNING: Deficient Linux kernel detected. Some driver features are
not available (swap file on NTFS, boot from NTFS by LILO), and unmount is not safe unless it's made sure the ntfs-3g process naturally terminates after calling 'umount'. If you wish this message to disappear then you should upgrade to at least kernel version 2.6.20, or request help from your distribution to fix the kernel problem. The below web page has more information: http://www.ntfs-3g.org/support.html#fuse26
Maybe my wordchoice is incorrect, it is supported from 2.6.20. ;-) (i read Andreas Hankes post also, do not worry..) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Even if it's support deadlock free SWAP support. The ISO feature is also very hard to implement .. because you cannot resize a partition which is mounted. I guess in most cases the partition where the ISO is placed is the only partition. So ntfsresize or parted will fail. Actually most of the feature have to be implemented in the installation system. We aren't able to do such task with instlux - instlux only modifies the windows bootloader and boots grub4dos with a kernel which is placed on a windows partition. If the installation system is able to handle that .. we could implemented in instlux to call the kernel with a special parameter to make use of it. Most boxes with a Windows and a NTFS filesystem should have enough RAM to do a installation without a SWAP disk on a NTFS partitation. @Installation Component: Is it possible or safe enough to make use of SWAP on NTFS and mount the media from a NTFS partitation as ISO? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Why not??? Anyway, I've added a switch 'use.ntfs-3g=1' you can use at the boot prompt to make linuxrc use ntfs-3g. That fuse stuff behaves somewhat strange, but hey - no risk, no fun. Thanks. Daniel: It's safe to use a swap __file__ (but not a swap on loop device!) on NTFS and loop mount an image from NTFS using the NTFS-3G driver. The Windows Ubuntu Installer is doing this for example. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=276450 ------- Comment #13 from szaka@sienet.hu 2007-06-14 09:02 MST ------- Lazy mount should work fine with block devices. I can't reproduce the problem with the latest FUSE kernel driver. What kernel and ntfs-3g version do you use? What device do you mount? What you have seen was probably "Transport endpoint is not connected." Which means ntfs-3g is not running anymore. In case of a real block device, ntfs-3g doesn't quit in your scenario. But it does if you were experimenting with an NTFS image or have old FUSE kernel driver. In that case you can get the above error in certain cases (other file systems indeed give different error message in such scenarios, so it's not too intuitive to figure out what's going on). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
