I run VMware server 2 on a openSUSE 11.1 x86_64 host.
When trying to run vmtoolsd in a 11.4 x86_64 guest it fails, in /var/log/messages I find this error line:
Jun 21 19:11:40 hugo vmsvc[2609]: [ warning] [vmtoolsd] The vmsvc service needs to run inside a virtual machine.
So apparently the guest doesn't recognize the VM as a virtual machine.
That's only few surprising though: you run a old version of openSUSE on 'new' hardware.. in no way could the old open-vm-tools know about this (the way out would be either the new open-vm-tools as recommended above or using the vendor shipped version of the vmware-tools) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Sorry, but it seems that someone where able to do so with the previous version: (In comment #0)
Before updating OpenSUSE from 11.2 vmtools had no problem working on "VM hardware" Version 7 ( just verified by restoring a 11.2 machine from backup )
Also note that this bug was reported before 12.1 was released, when 11.4 was state of the art. And that VMversion: 7 was released well before that. (In reply to comment #4)
Could you please verify if the version in Virtualization:VMware would work for you? Sure. Will try it tomorrow, when I get back to work.

What does /usr/bin/vmware-checkvm give as output? abekat:~ # /usr/bin/vmware-checkvm ** INFO: HOSTINFO: CPUID hypervisor bit is set, but no hypervisor vendor signature is present ** (process:2381): DEBUG: VmCheck_IsVirtualWorld: detected non-VMware hypervisor (). Not running in a virtual machine.

Could you please verify if the version in Virtualization:VMware would work for you? After update to version open-vm-tools-2011.05.27-0.3.3.x86_64 found in Virtualization:VMware I get:
VMware software version 6 (good) Also VMware is happy now and reports the system as "Unmanaged" (which is good, previously it read "Not installed") I do get a lot of noise on console on virtual machine though, which suggest that vmtools is not really happy. There were some updates for open-vm-tools (and affected packages) released for openSUSE 11.4
Please kindly test if this resolves also your problem.
open-vm-tools-2012.8.8.1-32.1.x86_64 with kernel vmware-guest-kmp-*-2012.8.8.1_k2.6.37.6_0.11-32.1 from openSUSE-11.4-Updates works without any problems. Thank you. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
