[Bug 556397] New: System freezes randomly esp. while playing multimedia
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=556397#c0 Summary: System freezes randomly esp. while playing multimedia Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: badshah400@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=328050) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=328050) System log (/var/log/messages) User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.4) Gecko/20091016 SUSE/3.5.4-1.1.2 Firefox/3.5.4 I have installed openSUSE 11.2 from the dvd and am using GNOME with multimedia packages from Packman/videolan repositories. Sometimes my system freezes badly for about half a minute to a minute with severe load on cpu usage. Keyboard entries or mouse clicking does not work, but as the system comes back to normal after the freeze up, all the keyboard and mouse events entered during the freezing suddenty bring up corresponding items (e.g. right click menu comes up although I had right-clicked during the freezing up). Though I am not entirely sure about it, I feel it is during interaction with multimedia that the problem might be occuring (e.g. during thumbnailing video files, or during playing back videos, etc.) This has severely affected my experience with 11.2 so far. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The 1.5Gbps forcing didn't get applied due to a quirk in sata_nv driver. Anyways, the most common root cause of this sort of problem is power related. It's weird but it happens quite often. For some reason, using NCQ makes it easier for power issues to propagate as SATA link layer problems which in turn can lock up some firmwares or controllers. So, I suggest testing the system with a different power supply.
Thanks.
I have two questions:- 1. I have been using the same power-supply for a long time. There were no problems with any of openSUSE's earlier releases (used 10.3,11.0,11.1 and now 11.2). Why with 11.2 should the problem crop up if it is related to the power-supply? 2. I am presently using libata.force=noncq until I get another power-supply. I have not had the problem since using this parameter. Am I right in interpreting your above comment to mean that there might be some disadvantages of using this option, and that I am better off not using it even temporarily? Thank you. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I really don't know. The thing is that that part of kernel remained about the same between 11.1 and 11.2 and more than half of this type of problems eventually turned out to be power problem, so that is my first hunch but I of course could be wrong.

You won't be using NCQ but for desktop usage the difference isn't noticeable. You're not noticing any difference, right? Thanks. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I will test out the system with a new power-supply as soon as possible and let you know.

No, I have not noticed any difference yet. I have noticed some slowing down of number-crunching using Mathematica but that might not be related to the present issue at all. For the present, i.e. until a new power-supply solves the issue completely, I will continue to use libata.force=noncq then. Thanks for all your help in this regard. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
