[Bug 215067] New: fglrx, compiz and XGL are problematic
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=215067 Summary: fglrx, compiz and XGL are problematic Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Alpha 5 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Xgl AssignedTo: dreveman@novell.com ReportedBy: romain.pelissier@sqliaison.com QAContact: bperry@novell.com I have a Latitude D610 with an onboard X300 ATI video card. As everybody, I want to test XGL/COmpiz with KDE. First I have tried to install ATI drivers from there web site (the 8.29.6) using this procedure (this procedure works great with previous version os Suse). - Install necessary packages (kernel sources and others) - use ./ati-driver-installer-8.29.6.run --listpkg to find the right package name - use ./ati-driver-installer-8.29.6.run --buildpkg SuSE/SUSE102-IA32 to generate the rpm package - use rpm -Uvh fglrx_7_1_0_SUSE102-8.29.6-1.i386.rpm to install it - use (maybe useless) ./ati-driver-installer-8.29.6.run to install modules and stuff using the ati installer - reboot - in init 3, use sax2 -r -m o=fglrx, check if 3d acceleration is enable and configure the screen resolution - start kde. At this point, I have reported the bug about the fact that in MyComputer I cannot have the list as usual and the status bar always gives me 'looking for disk information...' If i try to start fglrxinfo in a terminal, the utility display nothing and seems to hang. Anyway ... Now I want to use XGL and Compiz. I have installed necessary packages and then followed the guide at http://en.opensuse.org/Using_Xgl_on_SUSE_Linux I start with "gnome-xgl-settings" in a terminal that ouput some errors (in the result.log attachement) and the window that appear looks like the one provided. At this point it seems that 3D acceleration is not here or that compiz cannot be configured. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It should work better in Beta1 (which I think will be released tomorrow). In Alpha5, you might be able to enable XGL by hand by running gnome-xgl-switch -e as root (and then log out and back in), but I think there were also problems with the gdm configuration that will make it still not work. (Use "gnome-xgl-switch -d" to switch back.) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=215067 ------- Comment #4 from romain.pelissier@sqliaison.com 2006-10-26 08:08 MST ------- Thanks, I will try in beta1 as soon as I have downloaded and installed it. fglrx ... always the same problem with ATI drivers .. hope that AMD, now that they have buy ATI, can listen linux community and create better drivers for ATI graphic cards. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
