[Bug 390378] New: desktop-data-openSUSE: ugly login screen ( and hence xfce4 background too!)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=390378 Summary: desktop-data-openSUSE: ugly login screen (and hence xfce4 background too!) Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: koenig@linux.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- in case this matters: I run X11 on a T60 with 1400x1050 display and ATI fglrx driver for the ATI X1400 chip. up to desktop-data-openSUSE-11.0-42 I got a nice green kdm login screen with some fine light/white ornament lines -- perfect. using xfce4 desktip that login background is kept or reused in xfce4, all nice. -44 and -47 broke desktop-data-openSUSE with some missing files. -49 (IIRC) "worked" again (no missing files anymore) but now I got a big gray horizontal bar with some green bars on top and below. within that gray bar there was again some nice lines ornament. not really nice anymore, but oh well -- maybe someone else is happy this that design ;-) now with -52 and -53 even that ornament stuff is gone and I only see a ugle gray box in the middle of the screen (about 1/2 screen height with a thin while line at the bottom of gray) and about 1/4 screen on top and bottom with solid green. now this is _really_ ugly to me! if that's the new novell/suse corporate idea, I question the taste of your gui/desktop/whatever designer ;-) if it's just a technical bug, please fix it and give us a nice suse-like background again! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

xfce should afauk now use a branded wallpaper.
my bug report is more about the ugly kdm login screen which every openSUSE user will see (well, many except for gnome users? don't know....) about xfce: I'm using the lastest factory update: rpm -qa xfce\* | sort xfce-mcs-manager-4.4.2-53 xfce-mcs-plugins-4.4.2-52 xfce4-appfinder-4.4.2-51 xfce4-desktop-4.4.2-59 xfce4-desktop-branding-upstream-4.4.2-59 xfce4-icon-theme-4.4.2-28 xfce4-mixer-4.4.2-52 xfce4-panel-4.4.2-52 xfce4-session-4.4.2-53 xfce4-volstatus-0.1.0-124 I just did an init 3/init5 to make sure that kdm got restarted after the last update -- still the same issue: both kdm and xfce show the same ugly non-suse-stylish background... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I am going to work out some custom artwork for XFce soon. I am not sure if on a XFce install the default Display Manager should be GDM or SLiM.
what's slim ?
Currently, if you install XFce up on top of the 'basic X11 support' pattern, XDM is used as Display Manager (which could also get some facelift).
but again: right now my main complain is about the design of the _KDM_ login screen! everything else us much lower priority (even for me;) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

looks nice! but just a comment after looking on some of the screen shots: I'm missing a notice (feature?) how to select the desktop (kde[34]/gnome/fvwm2/xfce/..) at login time... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It is changed with F2 key (I think). But PAM support in slim support is quite immature so slim is a NO GO, yet. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
