[Bug 677263] New: Kernel Oops and lockup with message "PREEMPT SMP" when transferring a large file
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=677263 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=677263#c0 Summary: Kernel Oops and lockup with message "PREEMPT SMP" when transferring a large file Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: RC 2 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jeremy.figgins@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=417730) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=417730) Kernel Oops User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:2.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0 When I'm transferring a large file using SFTP, the system will ALWAYS have a kernel oops, display the oops information, and lockup. This occurs a few minutes after I start the transfer. The system is an Intel Atom D525 (1.8Ghz, dual core, 4 threads, 64-bit). Previously, I used the 32-bit version of 11.4RC2 on this computer and there was absolutely no problem. Now, I'm using the 64-bit version and I'm getting these lockups. I also once got a message in the terminal about "Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason 2C on CPU 0." I don't know if that's related or not. If I boot using the "failsafe" option in the Grub menu, then instead of displaying the oops information and locking up, the system simply freezes. Here is the oops information (the same information is in the attachment): Message from syslogd@linux-zmwx at Mar 6 18:06:31 ... kernel:[ 756.704522] Oops: 0000 [#1] PREEMPT SMP Message from syslogd@linux-zmwx at Mar 6 18:06:31 ... kernel:[ 756.704533] last sysfs file: /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu3/cache/index2/shared_cpu_map Message from syslogd@linux-zmwx at Mar 6 18:06:31 ... kernel:[ 756.704902] Stack: Message from syslogd@linux-zmwx at Mar 6 18:06:31 ... kernel:[ 756.704964] Call Trace: Message from syslogd@linux-zmwx at Mar 6 18:06:31 ... kernel:[ 756.705116] Code: 31 fe ff ff 0f 1f 84 00 00 00 00 00 41 57 49 89 f7 41 57 49 89 f7 41 56 41 55 41 54 55 48 89 fd 53 48 83 ec 18 4c 8b 67 10 48 8b 18 <4 1> 0f b7 84 24 ac 00 00 00 4c 89 e7 4d 8d 74 24 30 4d 8d 6c 24 Message from syslogd@linux-zmwx at Mar 6 18:06:31 ... kernel:[ 756.705255] CR2: 00000000000000ac Reproducible: Always -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

No, because the system is completely frozen, unless you know of a way of some way getting it after the fact.
Ok, so switch to the tty 0 (chvt 1), log in as root and run: klogconsole -l 8 -r 0 Try to transfer the data. Then the whole oops should appear on the console. Then grab it and attach here. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Closed due to lack of response.
Sorry, I switched to a different wifi stick and it wasn't until this week that I had a chance to try out the original configuration again. Yes, the bug is still present and installing the "compat-wireless-kmp-desktop" package from: http://software.opensuse.org/ymp/driver:wireless/openSUSE_11.4/compat-wireless.ymp?base=openSUSE%3A11.4&query=compat-wireles did not resolve it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I installed the 2.6.39.1-31-desktop kernel from Tumbleweed and the problem seems to be gone;
Thanks for the info. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
