[Bug 396318] New: printing doesn't work
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=396318 Summary: printing doesn't work Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Printing AssignedTo: jsmeix@novell.com ReportedBy: timmi@gmx-topmail.de QAContact: jsmeix@novell.com CC: timmi@gmx-topmail.de Found By: --- My mainboard has an internal parallel port (avaible as lp0), but I have no corresponding cable to make it avaible on the outside of my computer. So I've bought a PCI card with a parallel port (avaible as lp1), and there I've connected my printer (a HP LaserJet 4P). After the installation of 11.0 Beta 2 (or was it beta 3? Later I've updated to factory. However, I've the same problem in 10.3 final, to that's nothing special to beta or factory...), when openSUSE was booted the first time, the printer worked fine. After shutting down and later booting another time, printing didn't work anymore: I can send print jobs, but nothing happens. (The printer has a display, and normally it changes from "Ready" to "Printing" when the computer begins to send data - but nothing happens). When I look to KJobViewer, the print job is there in the list, with the status "Processing". Workarounds: - "kdesu konqueror", than go to "print:/" and than to printer management. There the CUPS server can be restarted. This sometimes helps and sometimes not. - go to yast, there open the printer configuration. Close the printer configuration. This helps most times. All this seems to be completly independent from the question, if the printer is yet powered on when starting the computer or not. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So it is "sometimes pci parallel ports works, sometimes it does not", right?
No. It _never_ works after booting.
Is it possible that lp0 & lp1 simply change names based on probing order, or something like that?
Hm, I don't know...
Can you try to reproduce the problem without starting cups / YaST / etc?
Yes. After _each_ boot, printing doesn't work. And when I don't start yast/printing and don't restart cups, I don't get working printing at all.
It would be best to disable on-board lp port, and then just see if echo foo > /dev/lp0 fails with ENODEV or not.
Hm, I was yet thinking about to do so, but the problem is that the mainboard BIOS doesn't provide the possibility to disable the internal parallel port. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
