[Bug 279699] New: Community Support Options
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=279699 Summary: Community Support Options Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 4plus Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: aj@novell.com ReportedBy: francisg@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de As promised in the status meeting, we've thrown together a mockup for the 'Community Support Options' idea we put forward. In summary: have an icon on the desktop called 'Community Support' (since 'Community Support Options' gets truncated down) that opens up the page with a list of support options, including the Mailing lists, the forums, and IRC. This is great because it gives new users instant access to new help, which is really what a lot of Linux users need in the beginning days. Current mockup: http://giannaros.org/suse/SupportOptions/ What it could be like in a borderless/menuless etc Konqueror: http://bw.uwcs.co.uk/screenshots/greeter-konqueror.png Other issues: * Konqueror will by default automatically launch Konversation, but this isn't the case with Firefox. Firefox would need to open xchat or the like by simply clicking on the IRC link. Is it a config option somewhere? * Is it possible to have a different icon on the desktop for GNOME and KDE? Otherwise I'm not sure if borderless Konqueror would be a possibility as it requires specific options when starting up. * I realise that the mailing list link is wrong at the moment. I think it would be a good idea to make a specific wiki page for users coming from that link, with easy instructions about signing up to the support mailing list. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

* Is it possible to have a different icon on the desktop for GNOME and KDE?
Sure, see the "My Computer" icon on the KDE desktop.

I'm not sure if a borderless browser would be a good idea: how in your Konqueror mockup would you close the window? Other issues: * How will translation work? * I guess product management wants to have some text relevant for the box product like in the current greeter. Have that text additionally, or have different files on different media sets? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=279699 ------- Comment #2 from stbinner@novell.com 2007-06-10 03:47 MST ------- Also, why should this information be limited to "Community Support Options"? As mentioned to michl earlier it would be nice have offline information like What is openSUSE / Linux / Free Software / GNU Project Goals/Guiding Principles Why openSUSE does not play MP3 & DVD How to participate Links to openSUSE News/Planet SUSE (via redirect) Description of Build Service, Link to Package Search Link to offline and online manuals -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=279699 ------- Comment #3 from marcio.ferreira@gmail.com 2007-06-10 07:32 MST ------- If you put that much information, people will simnply close without paying much attention, exactly like they do with the susegreeter message. Other difference in relation to the initial greete, is that it should be easily accessible anytime (an icon in the desktop?), because the greeter you saw it a couple of time disable and you will never see it again he. Kpeeing it with few options I belive will make people more prone to access it again, while if it becomes with lots of options, like a small susehelp page people will be less prone to go see it. Meaning I think it should be small, with few options. Maybe link for a bigger page in susehelpe, with complete list of options like the ones cited in comment #2 Maybe planetsuse would be relevant, cause the way I see it, the purpose I to have this is to get the new user closer to other users that might be able to help the person and make the transition less painful. The offline manual is in the susehelp icon already (is it installed by default, I dont remember anymore), but Ive just checked here in a new user, its no longer in 10.2 default kde kicker (should it be back? r make it an icon in the desktop). If I recall correctly it used to be in 10.1 kde. For the translation problem I dont really have a good idea for that. How is it dont in susegreeter? Maybe it could be just the same. They styles options suggested were to have a browser html or a greeter like window. I think I prefer the second option, but dont think its that much relevant. thats my 2 cents. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
