[Bug 220353] New: Pan 0.14.2 newsreader header pane color malfunction
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220353 Summary: Pan 0.14.2 newsreader header pane color malfunction Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: imotgm@yahoo.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Edit -> Preferences -> Colors Top two items for read, and unread color can be set to any desired colors, but the actual headers remain black. The problem is not in the pan binary, but rather in one of the supporting libraries. The Pan binary from SUSE can be copy pasted into another distribution, and it will function properly. A properly functioning Pan binary from another distribution can be copy pasted to SUSE, and it will display the above mentioned defect. I have tested this by transferring between SUSE, Mandrake/Mandriva, PCLinuxOS, and Slackware. The problem first appeared in SuSE 9.1, and has persisted to the present. Whatever supports Pan, in the background needs to be fixed, or the problem will carry through to the 10.2 release, now pending. If any other applications use these supporting libraries, I'm sure they will also show similar defects. This defect shows up in both the x86 and x86_64 versions of SUSE. I've personally observed it in all of the x86 versions since SuSE 9.1, and in the 9.3, 10.0, and 10.1 x86_64 versions. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Are you testing with the very same .pan dir on every mentioned distribution or did you create e new .pan for every test? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The last test was to move .pan to a different partition, and link it pack to ~/. When in SUSE 10.0, or 10.1 the unread article headers are black. When booting to Mandriva 2006, with the same .pan linked to ~/ the unread article headers are red, as per my preference setting. Switch to Slackware, unread article headers are red. Back to SUSE the unread article headers are black, as before. Just before writing this reply, I renamed the link to .pan on the partition, opened Pan and went through the setup from scratch, in order that a new .pan be created, set the header preference to red, and got the headers for alt.os.linux.suse. They're still black. This installation is from the 10.1 re-mastered DVD non oss version. The topic of the problem came up in alt.os.linux.suse, with a number of people having the same results. I thought the problem started in 9.0, but one of the other posters still had a working 9.0 and tested it and reported that all was working properly. I knew it was not working properly in 9.1 as that was when I first became aware of it, and it has annoyed me ever since. Also, as a clue, the indicator that there are more items in a thread, that one clicks on to expand the thread, in SUSE appears as a triangle, that rotates 90 º when the thread is opened. In all of the other distributions it appears as a square box, with a + inside. The plus disappears when the thread is expanded. I was ready to give up on this, as I am beta testing the new rewritten Pan, and figured that this was a soon to be moot item, but houghi insisted I should file the bug report, as the new Pan would not be in 10.2, and whatever causes this problem could manifest itself in other programs also. No one in that discussion reported results different from my own. Sorry for being long winded, but I'm trying to give all the information I can think of, that seems relevant, to me. Feel free to ask any more questions that occur to you. I'm willing to do any testing you might suggest. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220353 ------- Comment #3 from daniel.rahn@novell.com 2006-11-19 08:02 MST ------- Thanks for the explanation. I'll check some ideas later on. One thing I did not see you mention: Are you running PAN within GNOME or are you using a different desktop env / window manager? As a sidenote, 10.2 will have the current beta. I just checked in .119 some hours ago. I consider that beta more stable than 0.14.2. And thank's for mentioning the discussion in a.o.l.suse. I'll check it and also follow up there. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220353 ------- Comment #4 from imotgm@yahoo.com 2006-11-19 08:30 MST ------- I'm running from KDE, in all cases. Gnome and I are not good bed fellows. :) I do have the complete Gnome desktop installed though, in case anyone else wants to run it. I'm running Pan 0.119 currently also. It's a whole lot quicker than 0.14.2, and uses bunches less memory while loading headers. It doesn't have the option to change the color of unread headers though. Somebody up there really wants me to have black headers only. The discussion in a.o.l.suse was a bit back, 11-13, the day I filed the original bug report. As Charles Kerr says Pan 1.0 could happen any time now, when is the last possible moment that it might be able to still be included in 10.2? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220353 ------- Comment #5 from daniel.rahn@novell.com 2006-11-19 08:43 MST ------- Well, I tried to reproduce the issue on a freshly installed 10.1, running both GNOME or FVWM2. In no case was I able to reproduce the described issue, which makes me believe it might be a configuration issue. Not sure, though. To be honest, it might even be my checkin today already gets rejected. Checkin deadline is over for some weeks now ... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220353 ------- Comment #6 from imotgm@yahoo.com 2006-11-19 09:17 MST ------- Crazy time. I just did a switch user, logged into Gnome, started 0.14.2 and the headers were RED!! No changes to any settings. I changed the headers to blue, and back to red again. No problem. The score numbers were also color highlighted, while the are just black numbers in KDE. Logged out of Gnome, which brought me back to KDE, reopened 0.14.2, and black headers again. The problem is Pan in SUSE's KDE. What would be different in SUSE's KDE, from Mandriva's or Slackware's??? And why would it be so from 9.1 until now? That's a lot of different KDE versions. This is KDE 3.5.1 Level "a". Do you have KDE installed, to verify this? For the record, I have both KDE, and Gnome installed in all distros present on this machine, and this is purely a SUSE phenomenon. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220353 ------- Comment #7 from daniel.rahn@novell.com 2006-11-19 10:21 MST ------- I don't have KDE on my 10.1 test sytem - will install the needed things later. Can you meanwhile please check: Go into KDE control center: Appearance & Themes -> Colors Is "Apply colors to non-KDE applications" checked on your system? I seem to recall this is default on any modern SUSE system. Not sure about Mandriva and Slackware. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220353 ------- Comment #8 from imotgm@yahoo.com 2006-11-19 10:40 MST ------- Did that. It was checked, I unchecked it. No change. Logged out, logged in, restarted Pan, no change. I could do an init 3, init 5, if you think that might have any effect. By the way, I'm not sitting holding my breath waiting for your e-mails, even though it may seem that way. ;) I'm wading through some 300+ e-mails from opensuse mailing list. Those boys are busy! I'm down to about 75, but each time I come back here, there's about 10 -15 new ones when I switch back. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220353 ------- Comment #10 from imotgm@yahoo.com 2006-11-19 12:19 MST ------- Well, yes it does. ;-D It also blows away the keramik style look of pan in KDE, as well as the color. I rechecked the "Apply colors to non-KDE applications" which helped blend it in a bit better. After all this, I'll just have to use it's unstable self for at least a little while, before switching to 0.119, or 1.0. The benefits will be short lived, but I truly thank you for your efforts. The joy of solving such a long term annoyance far out weighs the actual remaining usefulness of the app. Daniel, I promise I'll get a warm an fuzzy feeling, and think of you, every time I see those bright red headers. ;-D I didn't know bug tracking could actually be fun. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
