[Bug 343904] New: Channel bonding locks system
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=343904 Summary: Channel bonding locks system Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: noelamac@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Hello, I just have performed a fresh install of opensuse 10.3 (64 bits). Installation process was smooth, but when trying to setup "channel bonding" using Yast / Network Devices / Network card, Yast stops on 66% while writing configuration and dmesg shows me the following messages repeated in a loop: bonding: bond0: Warning: the permanent HWaddr of eth0 - mac:address:of:the:card - is still in use by bond0. Set the HWaddr of eth0 to a different address to avoid conflicts. bond0: duplicate address detected! unregister_netdevice: waiting for bond0 to become free: usage count = -1 unregister_netdevice: waiting for bond0 to become free: usage count = -1 unregister_netdevice: waiting for bond0 to become free: usage count = -1 unregister_netdevice: waiting for bond0 to become free: usage count = -1 And so on. I cannot kill the process involved neither shutting down the system, so I have to make a hard reset in order to restart. Note 1: I have installed a text based system (no graphical environment) so I guess I may have missed any package needed for bonding that can make the system to freeze. Note 2: When setting up manual configuration of channel bonding (just editing the involved files, that is, not using Yast) I can get channel bonding working but when running "rcnetwork restart" I get the system locked and in dmesg I get the messages stated above. Note 3: I have tested the following steps: *** A. Manual editing (these steps are working great on suse 10.0): *** 1) Setting up network cards from yast to both use dhcp 2) Edit the involved files of network cards located at /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0 and ifcfg-eth1 with the following values: BOOTPROTO="none" STARTMODE="off" 3) Create a file at /etc/sysconfig/network with the following data: filename: ifcfg-bond0 file content: STARTMODE="onboot" BOOTPROTO="static" IPADDR="10.0.0.11" NETMASK="255.255.255.0" NETWORK="10.0.0.0" REMOTE_IPADDR="" BONDING_MASTER="yes" BONDING_MODULE_OPTS="mode=active-backup miimon=100" BONDING_SLAVE0="eth0" BONDING_SLAVE1="eth1" 4) Edit file /etc/modprobe.conf.local and add the following values: alias bond0 bonding options bonding miimon=100 mode=active-backup 5) Edit file located at /etc/sysconfig/kernel and add: MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT=e1000 *** B. Yast setting up (steps 1-11): http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/19955.html *** I get same result by using manual configuration or yast configuration for bonding: system gets freeze when running "rcnetwork restart". On the other hand, I can use "rcnetwork stop" and "rcnetwork start" with no problem at all. It's quite confusing. Well, not sure if this can be a bug or simply a lacking of package to make bonding working, but in the event the problem is a missing package I think this has to be warned by Yast before getting the system freeze.
