Are you sure the LiveCD is using the ethernet device?
Yes.
If so can you attach a dmesg log from the run with the LiveCD?
Sure. I am attaching a bundled file with the outputs of "hwinfo --network --log", "dmesg", "lspci" and "ifconfig" issued as soon as I boot the openSUSE 11.2 LiveCD 32 bits, GNOME.
Virtual machines are unrelated to this.

OK so this looks like the old ASPM issues that were present a while ago.
openSUSE 11.3 is based on 2.6.34. Quickly searching the e1000e changelog since v2.6.34 I don't see anything related to ASPM.
Basically what happens is that the PCIe link doesn't wake fast enough to get the correct data off the bus due to the ASPM settings. There are fixes in the more recent drivers. We also had fixes in some upstream kernel drivers but some of those kernels where ASPM was being enabled in the kernel broke those changes.
The latest driver on Sourceforge should address this.
Can I get the patches you plan on sending upstream early for our Kernel? Our release for openSUSE 11.3 is two weeks away and it would be nice to have working Intel adapters. :) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

We aren't submitting anything new for ASPM. All of those fixes are already included in the upstream driver, as of 2.6.34 anyway. So does the driver in net-next work here? Does the Sourceforge driver that we just release work?
Camaleon- Would you be willing to download, compile and test the sf.net driver? It would require installing 11.3. http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/e1000/e1000e%20stable/1.2.8/e1000e-... -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'll do my best for testing the upstream package, time permitting. I hope this weekend can provide the required information. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Does the BIOS on the system allow ASPM to be disabled? If so can you try disabling it and give it a try?
BIOS capabilities are very limited. No, I'm afraid there is none related with ASPM (I only can enable/disable the ethernet adapter but nothing more). I've also tried passing "pcie_aspm=off" parameter to the kernel but seems to have no effect: (with kernel 2.6.34) test@linux-5qwj:~> dmesg | grep aspm; dmesg | grep e1000e [ 0.000000] Kernel command line: root=/dev/disk/by-id/usb-SAMSUNG_VG38404A__8.4_0-0:0-part2 resume=/dev/disk/by-id/usb-SAMSUNG_VG38404A__8.4_0-0:0-part1 splash=silent quiet vga=0x317 pcie_aspm=off [ 0.619891] pci 0000:01:00.0: disabling ASPM on pre-1.1 PCIe device. Is this still happening on 2.6.35 now that it's released?
Yes, it is still happening (see my comment #32 on Novell's bugzilla) https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=615761#c32
We need to narrow this down more than it is so we can see what has changed. It does seem that this is broken on 2.6.34 but since we don't have one of these systems (and haven't seen this for some time now) it's going to be very hard for us to narrow down the actual changes that could be causing the problem.
I know, it's hard to diagnose... what puzzles me most is not seeing more reports/complaints about this, as this should a very common NIC chipset :-? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It's probably related to how they have the EEPROM configured. This would make it very platform dependent which would make it only seen on these particular systems configured in some special way. EEPROM images are updated as part of most BIOS's.
Can you attach ta dump of the EEPROM using ethtool? We can take a look to see if things are setup right.
I think you mean running "ethtool -e eth0" but I have to load openSUSE 11.2 to have an eth0 device from where to gather the dump. Are you OK waiting for the fix? I haven't talked to Bruce about this but it may be a few weeks before we release a fix for this.
Yes, no problem. At least the wifi card is working. @Brandon: This bug can be now closed as "resolved/upstream" if you estimate it convenient. In fact, this is not openSUSE specific. My main concern was that nobody seemed to be able to replicate the problem, but now it has been detected, I can wait for a fix. I'm comfortable compiling if I need to, but have little experience with kernel modules/drivers (so would prefer to patch and recompile a src rpm).
As there seem to be multiple people experiencing this issue I am reopening this bug. Can someone please post to the bug once Intel pushes a patch so I can integrate it into the openSUSE Kernel? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I built an updated Kernel for you test. You can find it here:

I've also tested it and seems to be failing here in the same way ;-( test@linux-5qwj:~> dmesg | grep e1000e [ 17.469619] e1000e: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver - 1.0.2-k2 [ 17.469623] e1000e: Copyright (c) 1999 - 2009 Intel Corporation. This is most likely a BIOS issue. Please check the BIOS versions on the two systems. My guess is that you need to update the BIOS on the system that isn't working.
I wish it was so simple. But: Both system have the same BIOS (version KGIBX10J.86A.3206.2009.0805.1855). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
