[Bug 1004918] New: sane-backends please package v1.0.25
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1004918 Bug ID: 1004918 Summary: sane-backends please package v1.0.25 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.1 Hardware: All OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Other Assignee: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: me@kalenz.eu QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- The sane-backends package provides scanner drivers. The currently available version on openSUSE 13.2 and Leap 42.1 is 1.0.24. This does not support some more recent scanners, such as the popular Canon LiDE 220. More than a year ago(!) the SANE project released version 1.0.25, which includes drivers for these new scanners. End users are being directed to software.opensuse.org to download an “unstable” package from third-party repositories. It would be a Good Thing if the SANE packages in the official repositories could be updated to the current version from upstream. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Kalenz .
your system should not "explode" when you upgrade with packages from the "graphics" project
No, of course not. :-)
At least from my point of view the graphics repository is not a real "third-party" repository.
And I agree with you. The reason why I said “unstable” and “third-party” is because these are the words that end users see in the openSUSE wiki and on software.opensuse.org when they install this package. The user has to click on a grey text that says “Show unstable packages” and then gets a warning message: “Please be aware that the following packages are from unofficial repositories. That means they are not reviewed by openSUSE and may contain unstable or experimental software.” I understand your reasons for not just packaging it. The current situation is not a show-stopper, but I reported it because it plays into people's (mis)perception that using Linux is a very bad idea unless you're on decrepit obsolete hardware. I got a bit frustrated when I saw that 1.0.25 has been available from upstream for more than a year. However, I did not know about the USB3/xhci issue, and your explanation makes sense. I hope it gets fixed eventually. On the wiki page (HCL:Scanners) I just changed the wording from “third-party” to “openSUSE Graphics Project” and added some noob-friendly instructions. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
