[Bug 549978] New: Application icons not appearing in application-browser for new applications installed using zypper
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=549978 Summary: Application icons not appearing in application-browser for new applications installed using zypper Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: RC 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: badshah400@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20090909 SUSE/3.5.3-3.1 Firefox/3.5.3 Using zypper to install new applications leads to the new applications appearing in application-browser without their icons and having generic (icon-missing) icon. Neither log-out, log-in nor restart solves this problem. Only after running SuSEconfig do the application icons appear correctly. AFAIK, this was not a problem with 11.1. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Install new app using zypper 2.Open application-browser 3. Actual Results: New application appears without icon, and with ugly looking icon-missing icon. Expected Results: Application icons should be immediately recognised by app-browser and one should not have to wait until next run of SuSEconfig for correct application icons to appear. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hi! I dont think this is a zypper problem, since as I just checked with RC1 it works correctly with the KDE menu. The problem is with application browser not registering the application icons correctly. This was also not a problem with gnome in 11.1 i am afraid. This is really a gnome issue, specifically with the application browser. Oh, the problem occurs also on installation using yast, so I will edit the summary.
I've tried, but not reproduced this bug on my 11.2 RC1. Which application are you going to install? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I suspect this is a problem of the specific package(s) - they probably do not run suseconfig to rebuild Gnome's icon cache, or the suseconfig itself has a bug. Reassigning back to Gnome maintainers.
We can't really run SuSEconfig from the package as it takes ages. Imagine if you install 10 packages and each package runs it... I'm not sure there is an actual solution for this when using zypper to install, other than having the user running SuSEconfig manually. (In reply to comment #2)

I can't reproduce this when running via YaST so closing for now. Please re-open if you can reproduce it with YaST again and let us know what packages are affected. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In theory, you will always be able to "reproduce" this with zypper, but if it happens when you install via YaST, please re-open.
Which package did you test? I can't reproduce this with RC1. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
