[Bug 240291] New: Installation with software raid in combination with fake raid fails to boot
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=240291 Summary: Installation with software raid in combination with fake raid fails to boot Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: SLES 10 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: leo@kangaroot.net QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Fresh sles10 installation on a machine were I put my / on /dev/md0 , /var on /dev/md1 and /home on /dev/md2 The filesystems used for these 3 disks is ext3 If I reboot after the first step of the installation my machine no longer boots saying "no operating systems found..." I thought it was caused by the so called fake raid which was also available 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation Enterprise Southbridge PATA (rev 09) 00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation Enterprise Southbridge SATA IDE (rev 09) (motherboard is a Supermicro X7DVL) Playing with some values in the bios to disable this fakeraid didn't help either. Always the same error. Only workaround to make my system start is to create a seperate /boot partition on one of the 2 disks. (/boot partition also ext3) but offcourse by doing it this way i don't have backup in case something goes wrong with the disk on which my /boot partition is. According to me it has something to do with the combination of grub, bios, software raid an fake raid. After searching a little bit on bugzilla i found 2 more or less the same bugs: #227377 and #233758 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The following disks were detected as part of such a RAID: /dev/sda /dev/sdb The Linux kernel 2.4 supported some of these systems (like Promise FastTrack and HighPoint RocketRaid), but the Linux kernel 2.6 does not support them at all. If you install onto thse disks, your RAID configuration and any data on the RAID will be lost. The BIOS expects a RAID that isn't existing - being able to boot from such a system is not supposed to work. According to the log, everything looks ok, probably the fakeRAID is the issue here Some of the logfiles are missing, especially y2log_bootloader. So can you please add this one or, if not available, /etc/grub.cong and /boot/grub/menu.lst. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=240291 ------- Comment #8 from fehr@novell.com 2007-02-07 09:35 MST ------- The warning does not necessarily mean installation will fail, it is more to tell the user about possible loss of data if raid is configured and used via windows or any other OS supporting the BIOS raid setup. My test machine has a PDC raid controller and of course it also displays this warning. Installation onto plain disks and booting nevertheless works fine on this machine. My experience with BIOS raid controllers is that every type of these controllers behaves subtly different and it is difficult to transfer experience gained on one controller to other controllers. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
