[Bug 206406] New: Size mismatch with YOU of OpenOffice
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=206406 Summary: Size mismatch with YOU of OpenOffice Product: SUSE LINUX 10.0 Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: YOU AssignedTo: yast2-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: jr77@pwi.net QAContact: kkaempf@novell.com I try to install the online update for open office which is described as being 25.0 MB in size. When my system monitor shows I have transfered more than 50 MB of data trying to install this patch I abort the download figuring something is wrong. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=206406 ------- Comment #4 from jr77@pwi.net 2006-10-10 10:33 MST ------- I have a dial up connection to the Internet with an ISP that limits me to four hours of continuous connection for downloading. The suggestion that I go ahead and download something that is posssibly more than 50M (real close to, or beyond, my four hour limit) just to see if it works, doesn't work for me. Could you do enough investigation to tell me what the actual size of the download is? If it is less than the 50M that my system monitors then something strange is going on! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Well it means I can't update my copy of OO. This is fixed? As for severity of the bug; If the actual size of the file is 25 MB and IP overhead something on the order of 5%, then me downloading more than 50 MB of data without knowing where the update service puts such data, means that I possibly have more than 22.5 MB of unaccounted data on my system. Can you assure me that someone has not hacked into my system and corrupted my copy of YOU? That I don't currently have a 22.5+ MB security breach. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

To check the actuall size, just connect to you favourite YOU source via web-browser and check the file you were looking for. Looking at ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/update/10.0/rpm/i586, it looks like OpenOffice patches are even bigger. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=206406 ------- Comment #7 from jr77@pwi.net 2006-10-11 16:08 MST ------- Now you are assuming I know more than I do. I guess this is only fair as it seems I have left out some pertinent information for you. My system is x86_64. I did not know to look in this ftp directory because YOU does not mention that that is where the mirror is getting the patches. It also does not mention the names of the files being downloaded to accomplish the update. I could not find this information in any of the available documentation about YOU. I would also like to know where and on what filesystem YOU stores the downloaded rpm files before the patch occurs. Again, this is information I could not find in any available documentation about YOU. Oh the joys of making the update process invisible to the end user! When I go to the directory you mention above I find literally dozens of Open Office related rpm files. I do know from YOU that my currently installed version of OO is 1.9.125-5 and that it is attempting to update my OO to version 2.0.0-1.4. It would seem to me that this eliminates about half of the rpm files since they seem to deal with version 2.0.0-1.2. But for all that I know the process of updating may actually update first to version 2.0.0-1.2 and then from that update to 2.0.0-1.4. Bottom line is I do not know the inner workings of YOU. I cannot tell what combination of rpm files make up the attempted update. Even if I did I do not know in what order they would have to be applied to accomplish the update. So I cannot determine what the proper size of the update should have been. Some of the files are not too terribly big and it might be that, if I knew the procedure, I could download the needed files and perform the update myself outside of YOU. I do not know what information you need to track down this bug. At this point, actually, from your first comment, it seems that you are not that interested in tracking down this problem. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I did not know to look in this ftp directory because YOU does not mention that that is where the mirror is getting the patches. It also does not mention the names of the files being downloaded to accomplish the update. I could not find this information in any of the available documentation about YOU.
The url I checked was only the example - but you should know which server are your YOU downloading the patches from. The server location you choose in the first dialog of YOU ("Location" entry). Also, the rpm's of the patch you want to install _are_ visible in the the dialog with patches - just look to the upper right window, there is a list of packages (with action symbols) for each patch selected in upper left window.
I would also like to know where and on what filesystem YOU stores the downloaded rpm files before the patch occurs.
What do you mean by "occuring of a patch"? AFAIK the rpm's are downloaded somewhere to /var/lib/YaST2/you directory and than are removed if you "Remove source packages" checkbox is checked.
When I go to the directory you mention above I find literally dozens of Open Office related rpm files. I do know from YOU that my currently installed ...
Well, I don't know as well - but the language specific packages are probably not interesting for you (you should know from the patch description if the patch is for OpenOffice itself or for language-dependent part). My point was only the fact, that the patches for OpenOffice (the core package itself) can be very big, and if you are complaining for this, neither of us can do anything about that.
I do not know what information you need to track down this bug.
Well, you can attach the YaST log files, so I can see what was happening during that update. (see http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs/YaST#I_reported_a_YaST2_bug.2C_and_now_I_am_aske...) But I doubt it helps - see more below.
At this point, actually, from your first comment, it seems that you are not that interested in tracking down this problem.
Well, that's not really correct view. For me it looks there might be a problem that a patch size is shown incorrectly - but what could we do about that? If that's the problem, we could release a patch for YOU, fixing this. But even if you could fix your YOU to show correct sizes, it wouldn't help you with really big patches if you have problem with ICP limits. YOU in 10.1 is rewritten (as well as the patch calculation procedure), so the (possible) bug shouldn't stay in later releases. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
