[Bug 230705] New: server does not show up in smb shares on KDE desktop because "os level" not set in smb.conf
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=230705 Summary: server does not show up in smb shares on KDE desktop because "os level" not set in smb.conf Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: matze@brucherseifer.net QAContact: qa@suse.de while it's possible to add this option via yast, it is not saved to /etc/samba/smb.conf. Setting "os level" to at least "1" is necessary to make samba act as a workgroup master. Otherwise it will not answer to queries for __MSBROWSE__ or master browser for the configured workgroup and network discovery will fail. Of course it's the preferred way to have a WINS server somewhere in the network, but probably 99% percent of home networks don't have one, thus broadcast type network discovery is still a key feature. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The value of this parameter determines whether nmbd(8) has a chance of becoming a local master browser for the workgroup in the local broadcast area. Default: os level = 20 Example: os level = 65 --- cut --- My default smb.conf has "os level = 65" According to bug 45794, samba-server sets the os level to 65 when configured as PDC. If os level is not configured, the default os level is "20" -- which means "at least 1". So if the browsing fails, there must be another reason, e.g., firewall turned on on the client or server, buggy samba. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
