Please uninstall xf86-video-amdgpu driver package and try again to restart X.
Thanks ! This brings X and GDM up again. However, the GNOME desktop doesn't load and falls back to the GDM login screen :-/
Attach the updated logfile in any case.

I'm afraid you need to report this to the GNOME component (separate ticket). Feel free to add me into Cc there. I"m sure there is a GNOME startup logfile. Location for this changes all the time. I'm afraid you need to ask for this information.
It wasn't GNOME's fault. The opensuse-factory thread "X broken with 20170204, system unusable" brought me on the right track. I have now - removed xf86-video-ati - installed xf86-video-amdgpu -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

It wasn't GNOME's fault. The opensuse-factory thread "X broken with 20170204, system unusable" brought me on the right track. I had exactly the "flickering" problems described in the thread. I have now - removed xf86-video-ati - installed xf86-video-amdgpu - replaced "radeon" with "amdgpu in /etc/sysconfig/kernel:INITRD_MODULES - /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-amdgpu.conf file containing; Section "Device" Identifier "AMD Graphics Core Next GPU" Driver "amdgpu" Option "DRI" "3" Option "TearFree" "true" EndSection - /etc/modprobe.d/50-radeon.conf with blacklist radeon and everything works. My 2nd graphics card: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Oland [Radeon HD 8570 / R7 240/340 OEM] [1002:6611] Subsystem: Dell Radeon R5 240 OEM [1028:210b] -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
