[Bug 223741] New: X runs at 100%
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=223741 Summary: X runs at 100% Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: RC 1 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: swesemeyer@hotmail.com QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com I upgrade my laptop from Beta2 to RC1 and when I have a long enough webpage open in Konqueror and use the cursor keys for scrolling up and down, it is easy to get X to use nearly 100% of CPU time (as shown by top). Any other window activity, like resizing windows or moving them about, has a similar effect. Beta 2 was fine. My hardware is a Gateway MX6923b laptop with an Intel T2500 dual-core processor, 2GB RAM and Intel 945GM graphics chip set. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=223741 ------- Comment #6 from swesemeyer@hotmail.com 2006-11-25 09:41 MST ------- Not sure whether this is related and if it isn't I can create another bug report for this but after I upgraded my resolution changed from 1280x800 to 1024x768 and I couldn't change it via SaX2 to the higher resolution, either. Sax2 said it was set to 1280x800 (24bit) but as soon as I tested the resolution the test screen would always be 1027x768. After some investigation it appeared that the 915resolution utility was not called anymore to fix the missing resolution setting. I had to manually edit the /etc/sysconfig/videobios file and set VIDEOBIOS_PARAMETERS="38 1280 800 24". Once I set this, I got back to the higher resolution and that's when I first noticed that the CPU usage was unusually high. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I just verified it by scrolling through all open bugs in Opensuse 10.2 IMHO this is nothing extraordinary after loading such a huge webpage. I don't

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=223741 ------- Comment #11 from swesemeyer@hotmail.com 2006-11-25 10:21 MST ------- Just booted into my 10.1 install on this laptop and scrolling up and down on this webpage sends X to a max of 3% CPU usage whereas under 10.2RC1 it's 100%. Moving the konqueror window wildly about brings it up to 40% whereas under RC1 even slow window movements will result in a CPU usage of 100% -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

However, scrolling on this page in firefox does the same CPU wise as in konqueror under KDE. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

There also were no relevant changes for the Xserver since Beta2+. You could try the "i810beta" driver instead. Maybe it fixes this issue. Replace the "i810" entry with "i810beta" in xorg.conf and remove the NoDDC option (same section). Restart the Xserver. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=223741 ------- Comment #16 from sndirsch@novell.com 2006-11-26 05:27 MST ------- I'll try to reproduce on a 945G machine tomorrow. In case your Beta2 is still available you could downgrade to the xorg-x11-server/xorg-x11-driver-video package of it to check if it's related to any Xserver/Intel driver change. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=223741 ------- Comment #21 from swesemeyer@hotmail.com 2006-11-26 13:50 MST ------- Right, I think I found the solution. At some stage during Beta(1/2) I played with XGL and compiz but after I found it to be quite slow and unstable I switch it off again. However, I did not de-install the packages before the upgrade. I just de-install them and the speed is back to normal. I then re-install them and everything is still fine. So I'm not quite sure what caused this but de-installing and re-installing the Xgl and compiz packages fixed it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
