[Bug 232086] New: installation hang (probably caused by presence of IOMEGA IDE ZIP drive)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=232086 Summary: installation hang (probably caused by presence of IOMEGA IDE ZIP drive) Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: sbrabec@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com After initial reboot (after installing all packages from DVD), installtion hangs. Two minute hangs appear during initial reboot. Then YaST X session appears and finally it stops forever. I suspect that the waiting forever is caused by illegal or never returning attempts to IOMEGA ZIP drive. During this hang following text appears in console: hdb: lost interrupt hdb: status error: status=0x00 { } ide: failed opcode was: unknown ide-floppy: stange, packet command initiated yet DRQ isn't asserted This appears several times during boot, then several times during YaST initialization of catalogs. I am not able to attach logs - all commands hang, but system is still alive - I can switch virtual consoles Installation of SuSE Linux 10.1 completed successfully on this machine. ZIP drive has no medium inserted. Configuration of my IDE: hda: Hard disc hdb: IOMEGA ZIP 100 IDE (hda and hdb are on the same cable) hdc: DVD-RW/RAM hdd: CD-RW/MRW (hdc and hdd are on the same cable) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It seems, that "rmmod ide-floppy" and disabling this module helps, so it may be a kernel bug. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=232086 teheo@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |NEEDINFO Info Provider| |sbrabec@novell.com ------- Comment #3 from teheo@novell.com 2007-01-15 02:54 MST ------- ZIP drive is pretty ancient at this point (or is it some new incarnation?) and this kind of problem is not particularly easy to debug without direct access to hardware. Also, IDE layer is becoming obsolete, so I'm not very enthusiastic about fixing ide-floppy for ZIP drive. But, I wanna know how the new libata stack works with it and am willing to and can fix if libata doesn't work. So, please... Install the system with the ZIP drive detached. After installing, switch the driver to libata one. e.g. if your driver is currently driver/ide/piix.ko, switch to drivers/ata/ata_piix.ko. This will give you the new driver stack. After getting this done, reconnect the ZIP drive and see what happens. Thanks. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=232086 ------- Comment #4 from teheo@novell.com 2007-01-15 02:56 MST ------- Ah.. one more note. Switching to libata driver makes your drive appear as /dev/sdX instead of /dev/sdX. As long as you mount filesystems by LABEL this shouldn't be a problem. Also, please keep in mind that changing driver for rootfs also requires regenerating initrd image. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=232086 ------- Comment #5 from sbrabec@novell.com 2007-01-15 04:29 MST ------- It is a NEC incarnation of IOMEGA IDE ZIP drive; manufactured in 2001. It is possible to complete installation system even in emergency mode and I did so. I will test the driver mentioned above. If it can help to you, I can even unmount the drive and attach it to an accessible machine. There is several special tools depending on access layer, which may require update: - "low level" formatting - media locking and unlocking using ziptool (the same can be used for JAZ drives) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=232086 ------- Comment #8 from teheo@novell.com 2007-01-16 03:45 MST ------- Hmmm... The device reports that it's a ATAPI device but causes HSM violation on INQUIRY. The drive doesn't seem to be following general SCSI behavior (INQUIRY is 'who are you?' in SCSI). The SCSI midlayer can't get any info about the device so it gives up, so no device. (glancing over ide-floppy...) Whee.. These devices need custom devices. I don't think we can use libata to drive these as long as libata depends on SCSI to sequence commands to ATAPI devices. I'll research more and report back. Please standby.
