[Bug 1007087] New: openSUSE Leap 42.2 repositories provide VLC media player, but fail to provide the normal VLC codecs to play all formats
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1007087 Bug ID: 1007087 Summary: openSUSE Leap 42.2 repositories provide VLC media player, but fail to provide the normal VLC codecs to play all formats Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.2 Hardware: x86-64 OS: SUSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other Assignee: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: nsleasy@hotmail.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- The user is able to install VLC Media Player from the openSUSE Leap 42.2 (Beta RC1) repositories, but not able to play media files. Normally, a package such as vlc-data or vlc-codecs is installed along with VLC to provide the necessary codecs to play all formats. This codecs package is missing from the openSUSE 42.2 repositories. The VLC Videolan repository contains the codecs package, as follows: *** zypper ar http://download.videolan.org/pub/vlc/SuSE/Leap_42.2/ VLC zypper mr -r VLC zypper se vlc ... | vlc-codecs | VLC: VideoLAN Client - Codec extens-> | package ... *** However, an alternative install using the Videolan repository above produces the following irreconcilable error: *** zypper in vlc Problem: nothing provides libopencv_core.so.2.4()(64bit) needed by vlc-noX-2.2.4-212.1.x86_64 Solution 1: do not install vlc-2.2.4-212.1.x86_64 Solution 2: break vlc-noX-2.2.4-212.1.x86_64 by ignoring some of its dependencies *** ==> Reference also the following old openSUSE 12.2 issue: Bug 686966 - VLC Repository missing in YaST community repositories This will be an important issue for many end users. Seems like the easiest thing to do is simply include the vlc-codecs package along with the openSUSE Leap provided VLC application. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

* The VideoLAN repo is not fully setup to actually work on top of Leap 42.2
Is being addressed by the VideoLAN repo admin; seems there is a stale build in the repo - the fix should be published by tomorrow -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

1. How is it that this is a legal problem for openSUSE, but not for Linux Mint and other Ubuntu derivatives where VLC works with (old) proprietary formats out of the box? Are you sure this is really a legal problem at this point?
Some distros have a company as main sponsor, some don't; the ones with a corporate main sponsor have more to lose and won't risk a legal battle over it.
2. If you really can't get full VLC functionality into the openSUSE repos, then what is the point in having it there at all? Most people use that application precisely because other purist OSS media players will not work with (old) proprietary formats.
VLC is a valid backend for phonon; besides, it lt plays so many more formats than what the patents would block.
3. Could the Videolan repo be added on install to eliminate this step for the user?
No - it's like 'inviting users to illegal actions'; but the VideoLAN website offers one-click installs
4. Thanks for requesting the fix to the Videolan repository. That should make it consistent with the way Leap 42.1 works now, although not ideal if you're interested in attracting users away from other distros where this isn't a problem.
The repo has been corrected and published - in time for the upcoming RC2 -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
