I installed Hylafax and smpppd to make use of the smartlink faxmodem in the case. After doing that I could no longer print on my OfficeJet T65. hp-toolbox started to crash and/or hang as well. Printer is connected via parallel port Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Get your T65 printer working via parallel port 2. Install Hyalfax and smpppd to use a smartlink faxmodem 3. reboot and try to print. The problem is the combination of smpppd + Hylafax trashing the HP-TOOLBOX when the T-65 (and probably any other HP parallel port with fax capability) printer is already installed.
My educated guess would be that Hylafax ASS-U-MEs it is the only software providing fax services and thus allocates stuff it should not. I firmly believe you can replicate this problem with any HP P-Port printer that provides fax capabilities AND USES THE HP TOOLBOX. Install the printer first. This is the other reason OpenSource projects get shit on so much, and deservedly so. In the IT world it is called "The Microsoft Attitude", in layman's terms, it is the "half assed is good enough" attitude. I've been in IT over 20 years. A professional is a professional whether they are getting paid or not.
