[Bug 551727] New: Xorg keycode changes
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=551727 Summary: Xorg keycode changes Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: RC 1 Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Release Notes AssignedTo: ke@novell.com ReportedBy: suse-beta@cboltz.de QAContact: coolo@novell.com CC: sndirsch@novell.com Found By: Beta-Customer The X-server has changed some keycodes since openSUSE 11.1. This will hit users that upgrade from a previous openSUSE release and have a .Xmodmap. For details, see bug 539135. You can find a list of changed keycodes here: http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/upgrade-veraendert-keycodes/#post-1673668 AFAIK the list is not complete (the start of the page contains some more changed keycodes for the cursor keys). Also the link is probably not really suitable for the openSUSE release notes ;-) Proposed text for the release notes (unless Stefan writes a better one): == X.org keycode changes == Some X.org keycodes have changed compared to openSUSE 11.1. If you are using a Xmodmap file, you might have to change some keycodes. See http://... for a list of new keycodes or use xev to find out the new keycodes. You can switch back to the old keycodes by adding Option "AutoAddDevices" "off" in the "ServerFlags" of your xorg.conf. @Stefan: is this text correct? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Remove this abstract. It was a wrong assumption. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Unfortunately we don't know either, where to look what has changed exactly.
The link in comment #0 contains a list. I don't know if it is complete, but it's at least a good start that lists the most important changed keycodes.
This looks so poor. I'm not sure, whether we really want to add this to our release notes ...
A short text is better than no information at all ;-) Just to be sure: was it intentional that your text says nothing about XKB? (If unsure, include XKB in the text.) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Well, it's a comment in german. It's far from being complete. And it's a link to an Ubuntu website. I'm not sure, whether it's a good idea to refer to it though.

Yes, it's completely unrelated to XKB. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It would be good to have a line like
„X changed some keycodes - so loading an old ~/.Xmodmap file will cause problems unless you change these keycodes“
in the release-notes also of 11.2 (and 11.3 and 12.0)
I had really big troubles yesterday!!
My .Xmodmap still works as expected, though. I think the version in comment 4 is fine. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I think there should be a note in the release-notes for suse 11.2, 11.3, 12. The proposed one in comment 4 is OK - maybe add a title like „xmodmap“. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I agree. Something like 'X.Org Keycode Changes affects usage of xmodmap'.

I think there should be a note in the release-notes for suse 11.2, 11.3, 12.
Thus far, we do not do this. We expect the user to check older release notes in case he updates from an older release. Such things must be discuss on an appropriate ML. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Well - try to find the older release notes. I could imagine to put the older below the actuel, which you find on http://www.suse.de/relnotes/i386/openSUSE/11.2/RELEASE-NOTES.en.html This starts with a large header openSUSE 11.2 Release Notes so below could come the next large header openSUSE 11.1 Release Notes and so on or at least!!!!!!!! links to the older!!!! Has the latter to be discussed? (And the first would have be to discussed where?) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
