[Bug 412012] New: YaST Update Error Ignored with Kernel Updates
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=412012 Summary: YaST Update Error Ignored with Kernel Updates Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.2 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: unixadmins@lightedge.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Customer I have run into serveral issues concerning kernel upgrades in both opensuse and SLES. I have opened a bug report for SLES and have a service request for the original issue with the number 10381526517 for those that have access. I wanted to submit this to the public forums so more people would have access to it. Here the issue that I have. Whenever we have to install a kernel update, fear spreads throughout the admin team as we know that there is a good chance we'll have to fix the box with a rescue disk. Typically, the error has been related to a corrupt Stage2 file in the grub directory. I believe that some module isn't being loaded in there correctly so it doesn't find the hard drives appropriately. I'm not a grub expert so I'm not 100% sure what all this file does. Recently, I found the following when a bad Stage2 file was present in /var/log/YaST2/y2log_bootloader: GNU GRUB version 0.97 (640K lower / 3072K upper memory) [ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device/filename. ] grub> setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 (hd0) (hd0,1) Error 21: Selected disk does not exist grub> quit Now, this is bad that this issue occurred. I'm sure that something with grub needs to be fixed in order to prevent this from happening. The bigger issue is that YaST failed to mention anything along the lines of, 'hey, don't reboot, you won't be happy with the results'. The only thing I got in the console YaST update was an encouragement to reboot the box and blow my foot off. Rebooting with a bad grub Stage2 file puts the box into a reboot loop. I can be reached directly at mpatterson _at_ lightedge.com if you need additional information concerning this issue. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
