[Bug 278268] New: suspend to disk does not work with ATI driver - let's blacklist it!
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278268 Summary: suspend to disk does not work with ATI driver - let's blacklist it! Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Mobile Devices AssignedTo: seife@novell.com ReportedBy: aj@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de on an IBM T41p suspend to disk does not work for me with the ATI driver. Suspend is started until freezing cpus and then nothing happens. The only way is to reboot the machine. I propose that we blacklist the ATI driver so that suspend is not initiated if the ATI kernel module is loaded. Or do you have a better solution? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

In insmod/modprobe. I thought we had a relationship with ATI and that they would fix the driver issues? Anyway, we'd probably need to white/blacklist specific driver version/Hardware combination. Or we just refuse to suspend if the kernel is "P"-Tainted. But Please get a "ok, let's do it!" from the SLED guys before i waste my time on this one. BTW: you surely filed this against the wrong distribution? This is for 10.3? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278268 ------- Comment #4 from aj@novell.com 2007-05-26 01:39 MST ------- Ad #1: The bug occured in 10.2 - but this is a suggestion for 10.3 or if we go the pm-utils-hook also for any updates in the ati-driver-rpm. If you tell me that ATI works perfectly fine everywhere with just this one exception, then no need to do any work - but if this is a general problem with the driver, then let's find some solution for it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Basically, you package a hook as described in http://en.opensuse.org/Pm-utils#Creating_your_own_hooks This hook does nothing else than ---snip---- /usr/lib/pm-utils/functions if grep -q ^fglrx /proc/modules; then echo "We will not suspend with the crappy binary only fglrx kernel module loaded!" >> $INHIBIT echo "WARNING:" echo "NOT SUSPENDING BECAUSE THE BROKEN fglrx MODULE IS LOADED! COMPLAIN TO ATI!" fi -------- and gets put into /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/66refuse-fglrx-suspend. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278268 ------- Comment #16 from sndirsch@novell.com 2007-06-06 06:28 MST ------- BTW, I don't want to maintain any STR/STD black and whitelists for this driver. I really have enough work with these proprietary driver packages. Someone should come up with a generic script to parse a blacklist/whitelist I can use for the package. Then the blacklist/whitelist can be maintained in pm-utils or whereever. Probably it will depend on more informations than the driver version. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I talked with Rudi and I agree that there is no use in disabling suspend generally. Instead we should give only a warning like this: WARNING: Trying to suspend with prorietary "fglrx" kernel module loaded. This is known to be broken on some machines. Complain to ATI/AMD. Andreas, please comment as affected person and in your role as "Director Platform / openSUSE".
