[Bug 957948] New: LDAP Client fails login after Workstation upgrades from 13.2 to 42.1
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=957948 Bug ID: 957948 Summary: LDAP Client fails login after Workstation upgrades from 13.2 to 42.1 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Hardware: x86-64 OS: openSUSE 42.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Workspace Assignee: kde-maintainers@suse.de Reporter: steve.wilson@fort777.co.za QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Recent attempts to upgrade 13.2 Workstations to 42.1 have all resulted in LDAP client login failure. In ALL cases, login as 'root' or local (none-LDAP) user is NOT affected and works perfectly OK. Further investigation shows that this is specific to Plasma or KDE Desktop sessions, whereas logging in as an LDAP client using Gnome (or IceWM) works perfectly OK. LDAP Server is still running 13.2 -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

What DM you use? Are you still using kdm or is it happening with sddm? Does it also print some errors
Also I seem unable to reproduce it here as SUSE internal ldap login seem to work on my workstation.
On 'upgrade' failure, have then attempted clean, new installation, but same problem. On checking /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager in YaST, I find ALL installations (13.2 and 42.1) show a blank default value:- File: /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager Possible Values: kdm, xdm, gdm, wdm, entrance, console, lightdm, sddm or any value Default Value: Description: But if I attempt to change the value it tells me I am changing from 'old value' of KDM. Should a new installation, rather than an upgrade, set this value to SDDM? This does not appear to be the case. No errors are printed when attempting to log in. The opensuse logo and progress bar appear but it then appears to freeze. Ctrl/Alt/Backspace takes me back to login screen. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

So existing .kdm and/or .kdm4 files appear to be the source of the problem.
I'm not very familiar with KDM and LDAP, where do those files reside normally? Perhaps there's some legacy code going haywire... -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

The .kdm is a 'hidden folder' in each users home folder. LDAP configuration is on a dedicated LDAP Server, with LDAP Authentication configured in each workstation, YaST> Network Settings> Authentication Client. I'm not sure exactly where the LDAP files reside in the LDAP Server. Deleting .kdm and .kdm4 folders appears to fix the problem but this is NOT a solution, as deleting these folders means that a number of features need to be reconfigured, eg Kmail, and this is by no means ideal! So I am still looking for a proper solution. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
