https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=411363 Summary: Laptop screen doesn't turn off while closing the lid Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: HP OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: adamox3@o2.pl QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Other So this problem probably has to do with ACPI or kernel. It is quite weird actually. I have investigated the problem as far as I could and will present my observations. THE PROBLEM DID NOT EXIST IN PREVIOUS (10.2, 10.3) OPENSUSE RELEASES. I think this problem is hard to notice since probably not too many people make sure that their screen has turned off on lid close, they just trust it has. I came across it by accident when I pressed the lid-close button. The button works for sure, it works in Windows and under BIOS control. During the opensuse 11.0 boot, as I keep pressing and releasing the button over and over again, there is a point when it stops working. It is around the moment when acpid starts and when the lid-button is defined as "ACPI: Lid Switch [C1E9]." If I do not play with the button at all and let the system boot until the login screen, when I THEN press the lid button, the screen does turn off, however ONLY ONCE. When I release the button, the screen does not turn on automatically. I need to move a mouse or stroke a key (in 10.3 it would turn on right after releasing the button). And when I press the lid button again.. the screen does not react at all, only for the first time. It's quite annoying as I need to make changes in kpowersave to make my screen turn off after a minute or so when I close the lid and leave the computer, otherwise the screen will stay on while the lid is closed and will heat up the whole laptop. One more thing.. Out of curiosity I installed on my opensuse 11.0 a 10.3 kernel-default. The screen worked perfectly, however many other services did not start, like ALSA, which made the system unusable and I had to stick with the 11.0 kernel.
