[Bug 447396] New: Mirroring servers don't have proper full ISO images
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=447396 Summary: Mirroring servers don't have proper full ISO images Product: openSUSE.org Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Download Infrastructure AssignedTo: poeml@novell.com ReportedBy: mokuno@sm.sony.co.jp QAContact: adrian@novell.com CC: sassmann@novell.com Found By: --- I'm not sure I've selected the right category for this issue. Please reassign if not suitable. Thanks. -- Many mirror servers which serve openSUSE installation ISO images don't have proper ISO images or have broken ISO images. Smaller ISO images, like NET and Addon images are OK. It seems that there's 'Over 4GB' issue? For example: - kernel.org has broken ISO images. ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/11.1-Beta5/iso/ The size of openSUSE-11.1-Beta5.1-DVE-ppc.iso is 86,067,200 bytes, which should be over 4G. - Mirror servers in Japan don't have full ISO images http://en.opensuse.org/Mirrors_Released_Version#Japan All of the following four servers don't have openSUSE-11.1-Beta5-DVD-ppc.iso file, but have the corresponding *.iso.asc, *.iso.torrent, *.md5, *.sh1 and NET-ppc.iso files. ftp://ftp.jaist.ac.jp/pub/Linux/openSUSE/distribution/11.1-Beta5/iso/ ftp://ftp.kddilabs.jp/Linux/distributions/opensuse/distribution/11.1-Beta5/iso/ http://ftp.riken.jp/Linux/opensuse/distribution/11.1-Beta5/iso/ ftp://ftp.novell.co.jp/pub/opensuse/distribution/11.1-Beta5/iso/ -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm not sure I've selected the right category for this issue. Please reassign if not suitable. Thanks.
Category is just right.

It depends. If download.opensuse.org redirects to such a broken server, _and_ the server doesn't reply properly, then yes, it shouldn't happen.
For example:
- kernel.org has broken ISO images.
ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/11.1-Beta5/iso/
How did you get there? We don't _ever_ redirect to ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/11.1-Beta5/iso/. We direct to http://mirrors.kernel.org/opensuse/distribution/11.1-Beta5/iso/. I have no indication that their HTTP server is broken. Do you?
The size of openSUSE-11.1-Beta5.1-DVE-ppc.iso is 86,067,200 bytes, which should be over 4G.
- Mirror servers in Japan don't have full ISO images
The mirror list in the wiki is very outdated, because it is hard to keep it in sync. Use http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.1-Beta5/iso/openSUSE-11.1-Beta5... respectively http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.1-Beta5/iso/openSUSE-11.1-Beta5... Beta versions of our products are not synced to many mirrors, only to a selection. This is intented, due to turnaround time and bandwidth.
All of the following four servers don't have openSUSE-11.1-Beta5-DVD-ppc.iso file, but have the corresponding *.iso.asc, *.iso.torrent, *.md5, *.sh1 and NET-ppc.iso files.
ftp://ftp.jaist.ac.jp/pub/Linux/openSUSE/distribution/11.1-Beta5/iso/ ftp://ftp.kddilabs.jp/Linux/distributions/opensuse/distribution/11.1-Beta5/iso/ http://ftp.riken.jp/Linux/opensuse/distribution/11.1-Beta5/iso/ ftp://ftp.novell.co.jp/pub/opensuse/distribution/11.1-Beta5/iso/
This is because the DVD isos (but not the DVD iso related files like .asc, .md5 etc) are excluded from the rsync modules that we use to feed mirrors. This is valid not only for PPC by the way, but also for the other platforms. The beta (and alpha) DVDs were not distributed at all, in the past, and with the latest beta I changed this, so the images are actually available. However, I only distributed them to *some* mirrors, in an attempt to balance mirror bandwidth constraints with user's supply needs. I'm actually very glad that you are interested in the PPC images -- thanks for it. Is this your specific interest, or were you just using the PPC image as an example? It is hard to estimate the need for PPC images being mirrored; any input is appreciated that helps me in planning for this. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hi, thank you for the report. I am always grateful for input of this sort! (In reply to comment #0 from Masakazu Mokuno) the server doesn't reply properly, then yes, it shouldn't happen.
For example:

I can't remember.. Probably I searched by Google with "ppc.iso site:kernel.org."

OK, I checked http:// one, it displayed 4.1G in size indeed. So their ftp:// web interface may have problem. I'm getting it with the command line ftp client now from mirrors.kernel.org. Thanks.

OK. I understand. I think the checksum files are not needed if the corrensponding ISO image is not tranfered. It may make users confused, or hope fruitlessly the ISO image would be send lately.

My primary interest has been the powerpc ISO image because it has support for PS3. I found the beta images for x86 were not found as well, so I decided to file this issue in bugzilla. I'm working on developing PS3 Linux and wrote SPDIF pass through support recently. Stefan kindly added the code to openSUSE's repository in this very late Beta stage. And the Beta 5.1 should have the fix for the severe issue that prevented the instlation DVD from boot. Stefan wanted me to do double check if the driver/fix work properly for me (testing digital audio and 802.11 wireless need some hardwares that he may not have), so I'd tried to get the images. Regarding needs for PPC images, I'd like to say that all PS3 owners are potential supporters of openSUSE, we'd sold over million units of PS3. Especially for who wants to write programs for Cell processors, well-maintained distros, like openSUSE, are the strong demand, I think. I'd like to say many thanks for supporting PS3 in your distro! regards -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
