[Bug 450171] New: missing PackageKit permissions after update 11.0->11.1RC1
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=450171 Summary: missing PackageKit permissions after update 11.0- >11.1RC1 Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: RC 1 Platform: i686 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Update Problems AssignedTo: tgoettlicher@novell.com ReportedBy: kkaempf@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com CC: sreeves@novell.com, dmacvicar@novell.com Found By: Development After successful update from 11.0 to 11.1RC1, the updater applet (kde3) shows available updates (apparently test updates). However, the applet aborts with an error "User is not permitted: org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update" and offers to run YaST2 to install updates. Expected behaviour 1. There is only a single 'normal' user listed in /etc/passwd. I'd expect that this user gets update rights out-of-the-box. 2. The applet should point to PackageKit configuration instead of YaST2. 3. The applet should ask for root password and continue instead of running YaST2. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

"User is not permitted: org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update" Sounds like bug #449157 which is fixed in kde4-kupdateapplet 0.8.29. You might want to test the latest version from my build service repo: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/tgoettlicher/openSUSE_Factor...
Expected behaviour 1. There is only a single 'normal' user listed in /etc/passwd. I'd expect that this user gets update rights out-of-the-box. I think that could be a task for PolicyKit. But I don't know whether we want our system to automagically reconfigure security. Some admins might not expect this behavior.
2. The applet should point to PackageKit configuration instead of YaST2. Is there a GUI for PackageKit and PolicyKit configuration?
3. The applet should ask for root password and continue instead of running YaST2. If a root password prompt doesn't popup no PolicyKit agent is running. On KDE4 it is called policykit-kde.

Is policykit-kde running? How did you update?
Yes. With YaST, booted from RC1-DVD-i586. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes, thats more like it. It didn't show the root pw dialog but directly the error. After a fresh reboot, everything works as expected. The root pw popup shows and, when cancelling this, the error popup (as in comment #0) appears. Adapting summary, this is now about policykit-kde not running directly after upgrade. Downgrading to major. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes. With YaST, booted from RC1-DVD-i586.
I have to correct myself: Apparently policykit-kde was not running after the first reboot into the freshly upgraded system (no root pw prompt popup) but it is running after a complete (cold) boot. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
