[Bug 224102] New: i810 crashes when playing video after resuming from s2ram
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=224102 Summary: i810 crashes when playing video after resuming from s2ram Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: RC 1 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: johnelliottmartin@gmail.com QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com I have found out how to get my computer to crash consistently after resuming from s2ram and I was hoping that someone might be able to help resolve this issue once and for all. Here's the machine type: s2ram -i This machine can be identified by: sys_vendor = "AVERATEC" sys_product = "E1200" sys_version = "To Be Filled By O.E.M." bios_version = "080010 " It's really an Averatec 3360-EG1, I don't know what the E1200 is all about. The graphics card is: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02) The story is I can run s2ram -f and it suspends and resumes just fine, however as soon as I play a video after resuming, the X server crashes and goes into an infinite loop trying to fire back up again. So I play a video, it immediately crashes X, X restarts, then crashes as soon as a pointer appears on the screen. If I press the power button on the computer as quickly as I can (like it's a nintendo controller) during these constant restarts I can get the OS to shut down normally, otherwise I have to do the 4 second power button routine. Here's the details of one video I'm running that crashes X every time: Stick figure fight.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 300 x 150, ~24 fps, video: Microsoft MPEG-4 v2, audio: uncompressed PCM (mono, 5000 Hz) And I'm trying to play the video's in kaffeine, which means xine, and it's using the auto video driver, I'm assuming xv, but I would have to be told how to find out what it's using for sure. Sigh. Could you please try the i810beta driver? Just substitute "i810" by "i810beta" in in the "Device" section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=224102 ------- Comment #2 from johnelliottmartin@gmail.com 2006-11-28 15:16 MST ------- I tried the i810beta driver and now things are better, but buggy. Let me explain. With the i810beta driver these are the problems: - pressing ctrl+alt+[1-6] to get to a text login works, but there is no video, not even a back light. - the xv video driver does not load. Changing the video driver in xine to opengl works though for video playback. - there is a flicker on my laptop's lcd display that is akin to a CRT. What works: - resume from s2ram -f and then playing video's. After trying this I decided to try the i810 driver again and switch the video playback to opengl and see if that fixed things, so now here's the rundown: What works with the i810: - video playback (using opengl) after s2ram -f - switching to a text console and back to X What doesn't work: - the mouse pointer doesn't appear anywhere. It works, but the cursor is gone. So it's almost there using opengl for the video playback driver, but as the default behaviour for xine's video driver is auto, and the first driver that works is xv, this means it will be broken for anyone who doesn't know to change it. And not have a mouse pointer is a drawback too :) Any ideas? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

What doesn't work: - the mouse pointer doesn't appear anywhere. It works, but the cursor is gone. Could you try setting ' Option "SWCursor" ' in Device section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf as workaround for now?

- the xv video driver does not load. Changing the video driver in xine to opengl works though for video playback.
This would be a possibility for the old driver as well.
- resume from s2ram -f and then playing video's.
Given that XVideo isn't active that is not surprising. Reading all that basically means that the beta driver doesn't make a single thing better for you. Too bad.
What doesn't work: - the mouse pointer doesn't appear anywhere. It works, but the cursor is gone.
Ugh. BTW - the software cursor approach from Stefan might work for you, but you might have distortions in the vicinity of the mouse pointer if there's some opengl rendering going on. Not too bad for video (as it is constantly refreshed), but extremely bad for other apps.
So it's almost there using opengl for the video playback driver, but as the default behaviour for xine's video driver is auto, and the first driver that works is xv, this means it will be broken for anyone who doesn't know to change it. And not have a mouse pointer is a drawback too :)
I'll try to reproduce, but last time I couldn't on my machines ;)
Any ideas?
No, sorry, except to wait for this to be fixed upstream... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Seife will probably know what to do there. Please CC me to this new bug, I have noticed yesterday that the EVEN_BUTTON_ variables don't have any effect for me either. Does hitting Suspend to RAM from the system tray icon work if you do *not* use software cursor? I'm closing this as fixed, as the i810beta will be the base of the of new driver. Hopefully, it will have XVideo support as well soon (and hopefully, that one will survive suspend to RAM :) . -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
