This is using the linux 3.0.0rc4 kernel from Kernel:Head project, but crashes happened also before.
Confirm reported problem in kernel 3.0.0rc5. Occurs in all post-2.6.37 kernels. However, problem has only occurred with the following Xorg modules: xorg-x11-server : 7.6_1.9.3-153.13 and -153.16 xorg-x11-driver-video : 7.6-222.2 and -228.3 xorg-x11-driver-input : 7.6-117.1 Regression of xorg-x11-server to 7.5-1.8.0-10.13.2 (with associated dependent regressions of -driver-video and -driver-input resolves problem. Related note: same kernel(s) on 11.4, using xorg-x11-server -153.20 appears NOT to present problem as yet. Problem is 100% reproducible with aforementioned packages by: 1. boot 2. login (KDE or Gnome) 3. Play Kpatience Failure returns to display manager (GDM and/or KDM) login screen. Re-login will proceed with one or more processors maxed at 100%, and crash will repeat. Attempts to select restart from the login screen presents loud alarm beep, a 30 second delay, and then back to GRUB. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Complete (100%, as in always) circumvention:
downgrade xorg-x11-driver-video (from 7.6-229.1) to 7.6-53.58.1
Above still required for kernel 3.0.0-4.1.
This problem has NOT presented with Gnome 3 in the above kernel/Xorg environments.
A single occurrence of the bug on Gnome 3 was seen. Update: ------- Updating Xorg, specifically xorg-x11-driver-video from 7.6-53.58.1 to 7.6-232.1 appears to resolve the original problem. Tested on 11.4 complete, testing on 12.n to follow. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Update: -------
Updating Xorg, specifically
xorg-x11-driver-video from 7.6-53.58.1 to 7.6-232.1
appears to resolve the original problem. Tested on 11.4 complete, testing on 12.n to follow.
With update to xorg-x11-driver-video to 7.6-232.6, the named problem (crash) has returned (with a vengeance). Regression of xorg-x11-driver-video to 7.7-53.58.1 continues to resolve the crash problem. Crash is absolutely solid and reproduceable with DE's of Gnome (2.32) and KDE (through 4.7). Problem is sporadic (in fact, rare) under Gnome 3 (and I do not have a clue why, though I am using Gnome 3 more and more!). Desktop effects appears to have no impact on probability nor MTBF of crash. Attachment of a real (USB) mouse, AND disabling the touchpad seems to ameliorate the problem.
