if you want poweroff, use poweroff.

Since "shutdown -h now" works most of the time, at least there seems to be an inconsistency.

No, just standard updates via yast. Maybe there are two independent problems: 1. The KDE and GNOME widgets sometimes seem to fail to tell KDM to shut down. 2. I have no idea what to make out of your bug. you seem to be the only one with this problem - sometimes.

Originally I was using KDE, but had GNOME installed as well. Then I switched to GNOME sessions, but was still running KDM. Now I have switched back to KDE, and shutdown seems to work as expected. Could it be that the GNOME shutdown widget is not able to talk properly to the KDM session manager? Recently the kernel powers off the computer correctly.
