[Bug 634064] New: OpenICC colour management repository on OBS
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=634064 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=634064#c0 Summary: OpenICC colour management repository on OBS Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Factory Platform: PC OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: ku.b@gmx.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; de; rv:1.9.1.10) Gecko/20100506 SUSE/3.5.10-0.1.1 Firefox/3.5.10 This is a request for a public visible OBS repository. There shall live in packages for colour management to build a according system. Problem: a search for OBS software for e.g. Oyranos in http://software.opensuse.org/ returns too few replies. Solution: setup a public community OpenICC repository inside OBS My personal repository home:bekun on OBS and a few others have much more packages available. They can become the building blocks: https://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=home%3Abekun Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.enter "ICC" in the http://software.opensuse.org/search search form 2.try to find actual packages 3. Actual Results: actual packages are not listed at all Expected Results: see ICC profile utilities, libraries, viewers, colour management enabled applications, Compiz ICC colour server, ICC profile collections ... The proposed name is OpenICC. I am ready to be the first project own. Maybe other interested people want later to join. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Well, Vladimír Nádvorník already packaged argyllcms, that resides in multimedia:photo.
I have just seen it.
Then I see graphics repository, which partially overlays multimedia:photo and contains other packages that may benefit from CMS (e. g. ufraw).
Finally, some packages resides in special repos (AdobeICCProfiles) and some that may be related are only in Contrib (ddccontrol).
(Having two similar projects is more inconsistence than intention.)
So multimedia:photo or graphics may be a good fit.
Agreed.
Alternatively it is possible to establish new project, e. g. multimedia:cms or multimedia:color.
or multimedia:color_management
Regarding the patches for system libraries:
Far the best options would be run-time switching CMS on/off with upstream packages. But I understand that we are not yet in such position.
If you don't break libraries ABI, you can offer overlay libraries and users may update them if they want.
Overlay libraries, sounds interessting. Have to read more about that technic.
My experiences with CMS and openSUSE:
I have a wide gamut LCD. The current CMS support state irritates me a bit:
- Setting display to sRGB mode makes impossible to benefit from wide gamut
- Setting display to AdobeRGB makes posible to benefit from wider gamut eg. in GIMP, gqview and few other applications, but desktop has a bit more vivid colors than it should have.
It seems you adjust the colour space inside the display. Does the display and Xorg update the EDID automatically?
- Setting display to Uncalibrated mode and introduction of argyll based profiles introduces even more vivid desktop colors and a bit higher color errors in applications that are not capable of CMS. It also introduces problems with change of screen brightness.
- Automatic switching of the display mode and profiles depending on application, brightness and scene has no support yet, and I even think that the display firmware (Dell U2410) may be broken here - I am not able to switch to AdobeRGB, just detect it and switcḧ from it.
Hmm I have here a similar setup. One wide gamut display and one around sRGB one. I use a compiz plug-in[1] to colour correct both displays to sRGB. The desktop is fine. However applications need to be updated to make use of the wide gamut capabilities.[2] Once both ends work together, thats a fine system. or multimedia:color_management
Isn't it a bit long string? Well, still shorter than Application:Geo:Postgres84PostGIS14 or KDE:KDE4:UNSTABLE:Desktop:kdepim45 and maybe better to understand. I am going to create it. This is your new playground: https://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=multimedia%3Acolor_managemen... Feel free to add repositories, packages, edit project information, add users that want to work on it. Feel free to add yourself as bugowner.
Overlay libraries, sounds interessting. Have to read more about that technic.
Well, I did not mean overlay libraries (however they are possible as well - use a separate directory, which can be preferred by setting of LD_LIBRARY_PATH or forced by setting RPATH during compilation), but an overlay library packages - simple RPM repository overlay: Link a package in the OBS, and apply a patch. If the patch don't break, it will build a library package that always has a higher Release number than the linked package (so zypper will prefer it). In this case, CMS enabled packages are either installed or uninstalled.
It seems you adjust the colour space inside the display. Does the display and Xorg update the EDID automatically?
What should I do to test it? Do you think output of ddccontrol -c -p? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Vladimír, if you have no objections, I'll move argyllcms package to multimedia:color_management.
Are here any other move candidates?
I am thinking about creating of these packages:
sRGBICCProfile: New AdobeICCProfiles will not contain this profile.
ColorICCProfiles (or color_orgICCProfiles): Free profiles from color.org: sRGB_v4 and sRGB_IEC61966-2-1 black scaled and sRGB_IEC61966-2-1 no black scaling
ECIICCProfiles: Free ICC profiles from ECI.
AdobeICCProfiles: I am not sure, whether licensing policy allows to put it here.
Btw. Oyranos a set of profiles. They are all libz/png licensed: https://build.opensuse.org/package/binaries?package=oyranos-icc&project=home%3Abekun&repository=openSUSE_Factory For the printing profiles even the original target data is provided to later recreate them. I will link that in. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Well, maybe we should define a package name pattern for packages that contain ICC profiles for public use (i. e. in /usr/share/color/icc/{profile file or bundle directory}) (only AdobeICCProfiles exists in openSUSE 11.3 just now).
http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=icc-profiles ? Based on the Oyranos ones that would become: icc-profiles-lcms-lab icc-profiles-lstar icc-profiles-photogamut-rgb icc-profiles-cineon icc-targets-fogra icc-targets-npes Maybe its good to have the vendor inside: icc-profiles-oyranos-rgb icc-profiles-oyranos-printing .. as there might be other packages coming too. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
