Simply use the radeon driver, which we ship with openSUSE 10.2. It's unlikely that the fglrx driver will ever support Radeon9100 IGP for openSUSE >= 10.2. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I need it only if I would like 3D accelleration... I hoped that by informing Novell, inparticular you, Stefan, you could ask ATI, what the plans are wrt. that chip... I have sent a support request to Novell as well, havenn't heard from them yet. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=228687 ------- Comment #3 from sndirsch@novell.com 2006-12-15 09:39 MST ------- ATI made it pretty clear I think. Here are M. Tippett's words about this. "With the 8.29 release, ATI will be retiring support for R200 class hardware in ATI's Proprietary Linux driver. This follows shortly on from the Windows driver which had R200 support removed a few releases ago. As some of you may have experienced, ATI has been focusing less on the R200 support as we have been increasing our stability and features of the driver focused primarily on R300 and beyond. Since ATI's Linux drivers share a large portion of code with the Windows drivers, the retiring of support on the Windows drivers increasing the risk for R200 support with every release. This will affect the FireGL 8800, Radeon 8500, 9000, 9100, 9200, 9250, Mobility Radeon 9000, 9200 and FireMV 9200 PCI. For those users with R200 class hardware, the Open Source driver on X.Org has solid support for R200 class hardware based on ATI's previous disclosure of programming information. [...]. The R200 support will exist in a branch and may have periodic releases for various reasons. For those who wish to track new kernel support with the stock Proprietary driver, the firegl_public.[ch] should maintain compatibility with the final 8.28.8 release for quite some time." -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

That is exactly what I expected... However, the appeal (to ATI) is that the current situation (SuSE 10.2 is shipping with X.org version 7.2.0RC2, for which the latest release 8.26.18 can not be used) is an excelent reason for making a new release of this bracnh with support for X.org version 7.2.0RC2 Could Novell please help making AMD/ATI hear this appeal, please... That's all... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Your chipset should already be supported by the radeon DRI driver. Couldn't you give it a try by adding 'Load "dri"' to Modules section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf?
Now I have added 'Load "dri"' of the configuration, and that works (as well as it did without). However it has further improved the 3D openGL performance by a factor of approximately 3 to approximately 500 FPS on glxgears. Thanks for that tip; at least it made google earth useable... However it is not a fix to the bug (cf. summary). But I believe it is a decision (cf. STATUS and RESOLUTION) that Novell will not put any effort (not even appeal to ATI) in getting a proprietary driver from ATI released for SUSE 10.2, correct? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Agree? It was actually not a statement of my opinion, but rather a question whether Novell has made such a (strategic) decision. I'll rephrase: Has Novell taken the standpoint to not put any effort (not even appeal to ATI) in getting a proprietary driver from ATI released for SUSE 10.2? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

No, not at all. We discussed with ATI on getting an ATI driver for 10.2. But what you wanted to ask was for a driver that supports R200 - and from our conversations with ATI that will not happen. ATI is working on a driver for 10.2 with version 8.29 or newer... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Correct. My question was supposed to be seen in the context of the bug summary.

Now then, Has Novell taken the standpoint to not put any effort (not even appeal to ATI) in getting a proprietary driver supporting R200 from ATI released for SUSE 10.2? Exactly. Use the open source driver for R200 cards. You even confirmed that 3D support works for you.
