FF2 hasn't used icons from Gnome but had its own in the different themes (Firefox 2 contains Tango theme prepackaged). So I'm wondering if Gnome returns the wrong icon or Firefox has a bug in the Gtk icon decoder and gets the wrong icon. Or everything is correct and the icon which is used to be the correct one for that certain size. Theoretically, the gtk stock icon should be only used as a fallback when icon isn't found in the desktop icon theme. The latest 0.8.6 release, which is shipping with Factory has the correct mapping, while 10.3 ships with 0.8.2 which doesn't. I have tested this actually works in the most recent Factory. Also notice, that KDE is correctly using just the naming spec and doesn't use the symlink workarounds.
