[Bug 728474] New: Boot not continuing if eth0 not connected (install with wlan0)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=728474 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=728474#c0 Summary: Boot not continuing if eth0 not connected (install with wlan0) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: dieter@familie-siebs.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1 Notebook with eth0 and wlan0, wlan configured with fixed IP (no DHCP), eth0 is not configured. Worked fine until reboot -> If I reboot openSuSE 12.1 RC 2 boot stops after checking filesystems if no cable is connected at eth0. At that moment I connect a network-cable the Boot will go on. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. configure WLAN0 with fixed IP, no configuration for eth0 2. reboot Actual Results: Boot process hangs after checking filesystems Expected Results: Booting normaly, configure WLAN0 with given IP Adress, turn eth0 down. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Or did it happened after changes on an already installed system? Are you using systemd or sysvinit? How much did you wait before you've connected the link -- more than 30 sec? When the STARTMODE isn't set to "ifplugd" or "hotplug" but e.g. to "auto", then rcnetwork will wait WAIT_FOR_INTERFACES seconds (default is 30) for the link. See /etc/sysconfig/network/config and ifcfg-eth0. Please try to reproduce (boot with disconnected network cable), call the save_y2logs script and attach the archive with y2logs, /var/log/boot.msg, /var/log/messages and /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-* files. Alternatively, the y2logs and archive produced by supportconfig (package supportutils) script. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The systemd finished booting in 6..8 seconds. The network set up continues in background and finishes something like 5 seconds later. All looks fine. Depending on how fast the wireless association finished, ntp were able to sync the time immediately or failed first and synced it a bit later (after the link where up and running). Consider to boot using "systemd.log_level=debug" and "systemd.log_target=kmsg" boot options, so you can see what happens while it seems to "hang". -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=728474 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=728474#c4 --- Comment #4 from Dieter Siebs <dieter@familie-siebs.de> 2011-11-11 16:44:14 UTC --- Sorry for late answer... The problem happened, after I have changed the WLAN-IP from DHCP to fixed IP. The eth0-interface is still configured with DHCP. Problem happened at every boot, just tested again, same problem. Waiting for more than 30 sec, maybe 1 or 2 minutes. At that time I connect the cable at eth0, system continues booting. After that, I can connect to WLAN (with configured) IP and I can work. I try to add wanted Log-files. After that, I can test, if the problem still happen, if I configure WLAN back to DHCP and tell the result later. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

With NetworkManager every configuration (dhcp/fixed IP for eth0/wlan0) will stop Boot. When I configure network traditional (without NetworkManager) Boot will stop short at the point but is continuing and finishing so I can log in. Fact is, when I use NetworkManager and I don't connect cable on eth0 boot is stopping. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

OK, then all is fine with ifup / rcnetwork. The rcnetwork script waits until the network is ready to use or timeout occurs (~ 30 secs). New is, that it also waits until IPv6 duplicate address detection finished (see bnc#697929) and that it waits also under systemd (bnc#719214).
Fact is, when I use NetworkManager and I don't connect cable on eth0 boot is stopping.
