If that's so it makes more sense to me, because I'm reasonably sure the bootloader picks the mode correctly. :-) hwinfo does it indeed wrong and I just submitted a fixed version. Please give hwinfo 13.39 a try ('hwinfo --framebuffer --log=xxx') and attach the log.
