I have stepped execution of the program and have found the difference: It seems to lie in simple-watch.c, function avahi_simple_poll_dispatch. If the bug is triggered, the conditional in line 550 "if ((next_timeout = find_next_timeout(s))) {" always fails, and the program runs the loop commented as "/* Look for some kind of I/O event */" in lines 568-580.
