[Bug 771534] New: grub2 (text mode) + systemd can't boot to runlevel 3 (no X)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=771534 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=771534#c0 Summary: grub2 (text mode) + systemd can't boot to runlevel 3 (no X) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: RC 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader AssignedTo: jsrain@suse.com ReportedBy: Eduard.Avetisyan@desy.de QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=498655) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=498655) booting to runlevel 3 in grub2 User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1 grub2 in RC1 doesn't have the graphical boot menu (see bug 771393). If one press 'e' to edit the boot options (see the screenshot) and boots to runlevel 3 without X, then systemd will just wait indefinitely after starting the SuSEfirewall2 (see next screenshot). Installed using KDE Live CD. This seems to be a general problem of systemd - it would stop on every major or minor inconsistency in the system. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. boot up 2. edit the boot options in grub2 (runlevel 3) 3. see the system stop booting after starting the firewall I think on any system there comes a moment when graphics is broken. In that moment one should be able to boot to text console. This is not possible in RC1 (or the method to reach it has changed so dramatically that this needs to be pointed out in every release announcement). Hence I consider this a major bug. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Did you try to press enter ? Yes, and it didn't help, however I'm pretty sure the system was ok, but the prompt got hidden by other services starting a bit late. your idea wasn't totally wrong, as pressing Alt-F2 for the second virtual console seemingly did the trick. But I have a feeling that the login prompt actually gets initialized only at the moment Alt-F2 is pressed, as while getting back to the first console by Alt-F1 there is a login prompt as well, and all the startup messages are gone. Anyway, if this isn't a bug, then it's a very poorly documented (mis)feature :)
